In fact, the initial two-week prognosis is now looking more like a month from the time of the injury that the 7-footer will return to action.
Olynyk rejoined the Celtics today after getting a second opinion in Los Angeles on Thursday.
“It’s a little bit of separation, maybe,” Olynyk said this morning prior to the Celtic’s morning shoot-around. “Rest, recovery, treatments … it should be alright.”
While the injury appeared to have occurred in Boston’s 139-134 overtime win against the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 10, Olynyk had some soreness in the shoulder prior to the Clippers game when DeAndre Jordan landed on it.
It’s unclear if the blow he took in the Clippers game aggravated what may have been a pre-existing injury that Olynyk wasn’t fully aware of had existed.
One things for sure: the Celtics will miss having him in their lineup.
Olynyk has become an integral part of Boston’s small-ball “skilled ball” unit which had him playing center.
That would have been especially beneficial tonight against the Jazz, one of the NBA’s top defensive teams. They feature 7-foot-1 Rudy Gobert in the middle.
“Somebody has to step up,” said Boston’s Isaiah Thomas. “As a collective group, we have to step up but also as the bigs they have to step up. He brings a lot to the table. He spaces the floor for everybody because he can shoot so well and he’s so versatile. Guys have to step up and take advantage of the opportunity that comes with that.”
