There are examples of the no.1 pick being traded, but has a traded future draft pick ever ended up turning out to be at the top spot?

Yes, the Lakers got Magic Johnson in 1979 from a trade with the Jazz in 1976 along with James Worthy in 1982 in a trade with the Cavs from 1980.

The Celtics traded Bob McAdoo to the Pistons in 1979 that netted the top pick in 1980 that they traded to the Warriors for the 3rd Pick (McHale) and Robert Parish.

The Cavs traded Mo Williams to the Clippers in return for taking on Baron Davis's contract and a 1st round pick that turned into Kyrie Irving.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

I always wondered if they would have made that trade if James had stayed.
