On the other end, let's say Kaminsky is every bit as good as Charlotte thinks he is. Imagine he's like a less athletic version of LaMarcus Aldridge with a more developed three point shot.
Then you look at that package of picks Ainge offered in a few years and it turns out it was 2015 #16, #28, #33, & #45, plus the 2016 #15 and #17 picks. Let's say all of those picks turn into bench players or D-Leaguers.
Oh, and Charlotte makes the playoffs as a middle seed next season and makes it to the second round, the crowning achievement of Big Al's career, with Kaminsky getting 1st team All-Rookie honors. That would be a really big deal for that franchise.
People keep talking about Jordan, but they forget that Rich Cho works for the Hornets, too, and he's not a dummy.
There is little evidence that MJ or Cho are able to accurately identify some mythical "less athletic version of LaMarcus Aldridge with a more developed three point shot" that can be had with the 9th pick. What there is ample evidence of is there inability to find proper value in any draft slot. I like Kaminsky, but not at 9 when Winslow is still on the board. They haven't hit on a single pick in 10 years. Ahem, let me clear my throat:
2006: Adam Morrison at 3
2007: Brandan Wright at 8
2008: Gerald Henderson at 12
2009: D.J. Augustin at 9
2011: Kemba Walker at 9
2012: MKG at 2
2013: The less accomplished Zeller at 4.
2014: Noah Vonleh at 9. Already gone
That is a trail of tears.
