It's time to go shopping at the family dollar store ;D

The Miami Heat have settled on their 15-player final roster with the release of Khem Birch on Saturday, as reported by the Miami Herald.

The athletic power forward who went undrafted out of UNLV had a good showing in the preseason with his strong defense and rebounding skills. Birch had six rebounds and three blocks along with five personal fouls in Friday's win over the Memphis Grizzlies. He also grabbed 13 rebounds in 32 minutes against the San Antonio Spurs last Saturday.

The Lakers have trimmed their roster down to the regular-season maximum of 15 players, waiving rookies Roscoe Smith and Jabari Brown on Saturday.

Smith, a small forward from UNLV, averaged 3.1 points with 3.1 rebounds in seven preseason appearances.

Brown, a guard from Missouri, played just 22 minutes in four exhibition games, scoring five points with an assist.

Imo, I'd rather have Smith than Powell, but, couldn't we sign him to our D-League team for now, or do these guys have to go through a draft in the minor leagues?  Just wondering.

No we don't.. Birch is considered an actual defensive rim protector, whereas Powell is a smart 4 with athletic ability and great passing.

Can we sign players like Birch or McAdoo to non-guaranteed deals, cut them and then have them play on the Red Claws like Eddie will most likely do?

a number of folks know more than i do on this, but i believe they could just sign with the red claws and play. but in any case, if another team offers them a contract they would be free to sign with anyone.

Did you watch him play at Stanford, then, because I didn't see any of that in the preseason.  Of course, he played sparingly, so I'll rely on your take here.  I did like his lateral quickness that gives him the ability to guard small forwards, but I haven't seen anything else that would intrigue me about him.  In fairness, though, I'm not expecting these guys to be great players, but why not try them out?  What do we have to lose?  Smith, for example, is really a 3, and he led the nation in rebounding last year, so that has to count for something.  Maybe he can be a Renaldo Balkman-type player without the attitude problems.  I would be interested to see how well we'd perform on the boards with Sullinger and Smith on the court at the same time.

As for Birch, at least he'd be a guy who can actually block a shot, lol, but I wouldn't expect a lot from him aside from that.  I believe someone on here called him the next Jarvis Varnado lol.

I'd have more interest in Birch as a real shot blocker than Smith as a 3 without 3pt range.

They aren't even in the same universe. Khem Birch is a raw, underdeveloped rim protector with a limited offensive skill-set. Dwight Powell is an experienced, jack of all trades, master of none type.

In other words, Dwight Powell is to Brian Scalabrine as Khem Birch is to Ryan Hollins.

That is what he known for. Even CBS said that himself. Either way Powell is a great player, but Birch has the wingspan and speed and athleticisms to be like a poor mans Sanders. We have an influx or surplus of 4, and Powell cannot guard 3 or 5 all too well even against garbage players in garbage minutes in the preseason.

A poor man's fab melo?? Sign me up!
Obviously these guys were cut for a reason.
I doubt they would make our 15 man roster.
But maybe we can sign them up with the Red Claws... *shrug*

Powell is a "great" player?

Okay not great but he has some upside. I still would like Birch.

In other words, Dwight Powell is to Brian Scalabrine as Khem Birch is to Ryan Hollins.

And then the Celtics fans wept when they realized the paucity of their frontcourt depth.
