I like how the team is filling up with shooting big men who can stretch the floor.. His first year he was only able to pop off midrange shots but couldnt play inside very well.. Last year he got better, bulked up a little and still possesses the ability to run the floor, hit 20 footers, and has a nice hook shot. Still is a liability of defense but with great natural size and maybe more girth he can start right away at the 5.
Also to mention Clevland had a logjam at center Varejo and Bynum then Bynum left and Hawees came in as well as Sims..
"great natural size"....let's take a look.
first, i never thought he possessed "unnatural size".
next, zeller's standing reach is 8' 8.5".
- the average standing reach for an nba center is 9' 1.3". (4.8 inches higher)
- sully is 8' 9.5"
- olly is 9'
- bass is 8' 10.5"
finally, the average wingspan for an nba center is 7' 2.6". zeller's cute little t-rex arms only make it to 7'.
i think seller is a good pick up since the price was really only his salary. but i am concerned about his ability to rebound under the basket with that reach. i just don't see an advantage in terms of his "size" here.
So only guys with long arms can be good rebounders?
and guys with short arms can all rebound well? see? two can play the question game, but where does it get us?
instead of asking the question you did, you might instead pose a counter argument, such as...
but if we factor in his vertical leap, then that would over come some of the problem, except for posting up.
or...
maybe compare his rebounding stats vis-a-vis other centers? such points would open up more interesting conversations in all likelihood.
