This was actually the point in the season where I thought this guy might be the real deal. Take a look at the presser and tell me you don't walk away from that feeling like: OK, this guy gets what he did, and he is going to be better for it (the audio is pretty low so you will have to turn it up).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR5fTaxdjiIUsually in situations like this, athletes send out pre-written statements, read from cards, and barely make eye contact. Smart stood up there like a man, took blame, apologized to all affected, and accepted the suspension and spoke from the heart rather than a prepared speech.
It's in tough times where you can see the true character of people, and I think Smart handled a mistake he made in the moment of a heated game like a true leader.
And as a side bar, the guy in the stands deserved that push. I agree, as a basketball player, you can't react, but that does not change the fact that the guy deserved it. The fan admitted to saying "You're a piece of crap" while Smart layed on the floor. Let's be honest, nobody uses the phrase "You're a piece of crap" so at the very least we know the guy must have said "You're a piece of ****". Now whether he threw a racial slur in that or not, cannot be proven, but what grown man attending a basketball game yells that at an 18 year old kid playing collegiate level basketball? I'm not saying what Smart did was right, but I am saying that I understand.
I'm ready for Smart to bring some serious toughness and motor to this team. I actually can see both Rondo and Green thriving next to a guy like this.
