Phil Jackson showed in his later years that when his team's talent slipped, he had no answers or adjustments. He benefitted from having the best players and is not even close to Pop if you gave both of them the same mediocre team. However, if you gave Jackson a dysfunctional team with great talent he would manage the drama better. Pop wouldnt put up with half of the NBA stars... he would run them off probably.

Part of coaching is managing egos...but Pop is far superior in strategy, adjustments and offensive schemes IMO.

Phil Jackson deserves credit.  11 championships is unreal.  Sure he had the players, but so have other coaches over the years, and were unable to win championships.  (e.g., Gene Shue's '77 Sixer team, or the Lakers in '69).

Jordan had played several years before Phil came in, without much play-off success.  Jackson helped teach Jordan how to win. He did the same thing when he joined the Lakers.  Shaq and Kobe were already together and could not win. He helped them figure out how to do it.  Similar to what Doc did with our team when KG and Ray came in.  It took a certain type of coach to get them to buy in (e.g., Ubuntu).

Pop, he doesn't have assistants that run the show like Phil did with the triangle.   Phil is a get the best star and get out of his way coach like Spoelstra except he can manage the press and his players better than Spoelstra.

as much as ive tried to downplay Jacksons coaching abilities/legacy in this thread, he is still so many levels above Spoelstra.  Spoelstra did get the Heat two titles, yes, but I think his limitations as a coach cost this Heat team one title (Dallas) and theres no way Jacksons team would look this bad in this years finals against the Spurs.  I honestly think that after the stars leave Miami, Spoelstra is going to follow the same route as Mike Brown.

Woah, unfriendly.

Another thing to consider on the cheap ownership front -- Jackson had to put up with the Chicago Front Office on his first goaround. I think most coaches would take RC (not to mention an 'unofficial GM gig') over the Windy City any day.

Pop way over Phil. along with what has been mentioned already you also have to consider that Pop has to work with a small market budget for signing international draft picks. imagine if some of these players that the Spurs drafted but could not afford to keep had played for them.

for Luis Scola and Jackie Butler they got Vassilis Spanoulis and a 2009 2nd round draft pick (Nando De Colo was later selected).

they drafted then later traded Leandro Barbosa for a future 2005 1st round draft pick. traded that, Malik Rose and a 2006 1st round draft pick Jamison Brewer and Nazr Mohammed.

for Goran Dragic they got Malik Hairston, cash and a 2009 2nd round draft pick (DeJuan Blair was later selected)

I agree with this 100% and I dont know how the Spurs organization works and how much power Pop has but unless hes completely running player management, the Spurs GM RC Buford deserves a ton of credit as well unless hes just there to manage the cap, but I doubt it.

Pop stepped down from being the GM so he could be the head coach. He's got a whole lot of say.  ;)

So true.

You give me a star-studded team, I'd trust Phil Jackson to definitely win one.

Spo had Riley ...the enforcer behind him.......Riley is a not a joking around coach,  Wade wouldn't play for Riley in his face in practice or as his head coach .

Spo ....has learned to coach .....via Riley in the background

Spo might coach College ......but I don't see him putting a team together like Pop...ever

Spo is a ball less Jackson.  Wimpy babysitter.  ......for Riley

Popovich every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

- A better track record in developing players and turning the good into very good, and the very good into great.
- The ability to win with a variety of systems and tactical variations.

Duncan used to be arguably the best player in the league.  But Pop is about to win a title with no superstar, Pistons style.  Very rare.  Phil was never in that situation.
