It was a good call.

The bad calls is when they let the offensive player get away with the kick.

I'm not down with blatant leg kicks, but this didn't seem that way to me. I mean, if a guy is going hard in one direction, tries to stabilize for a quick catch and shoot, he may still have a bit of residual momentum that, after briefly stabilizing for the shot, propels him in his original direction, in which case a bit of a leg flail would be completely natural.

Besides, since he got the shot off before the alleged foul, shouldn't the shot still count? Kind of like when a guy makes a shot but his teammate under the hoop commits a foul while positioning for the rebound, but the shot still counts.

Should have been a no call.

There was some leg extension there, but IMO it's not intentional or Lowry would have Reggie Miller'd all the way.

And I agree, if refs call this on Lowry, they should call the same for Harden, Wade and (i hate to say this) Steph Curry.

Cosign on all of this. Let's have some darn consistency, please.

Call it or don't call it, I'm fine either way as long as it's consistent.

The biggest problem I have with NBA reffing is that the rules apply differently to different players.

It's partly that, but it's also true that a substantial amount of variance in calls is due to differences between officials, not players.  It tends to get disregarded because players are so much more noticeable.

Some of that is differences in personality, some differences in perception, but a lot is due to the unwritten standard that refs should engage in "game management" as well as just making by-the-book calls. "Game management" is by necessity so poorly defined that everyone's going to apply it differently.

It's a broad cultural issue I think, and there isn't really a good solution - even if officials could call everything identically regardless of context there'd be a ton of unintended consequences from that too.

It also gets swept under the rug because the NBA refuses to release their referee foul records - even though they keep track of which referees call which fouls.

Yeah, to me the offensive foul is fine.  Regardless of who got away with it in the past that's very explicitly supposed to be a foul now.

The immediate ejection for just running away is much worse to me.  Though with Lowry's rep that might've just been a straw that broke the camel's back situation (it sounds like he already had a tech at least).

I know right.  It was ok when Lebron did it and run around the court like a spoiled brat.

I have a question, why was that rule made?  I know they put it in place because Reggie Miller but what is the purpose because I can't figure out anything wrong with just vertically jumping with one leg sticking out.

It's an attempt to initiate contact to dupe the refs into a call, but it also impairs the defender's ability to contest the shot, and either hitting or avoiding the leg can cause the defender to make additional contact that would normally be a foul.

Offensive players generally aren't supposed to be able to initiate contact to make more space or create fouls that wouldn't have happened without it.

So how does this work when Pierce, Wade, and numerous others wait for someone to jump on a fake then they jump right into them to draw the foul?  I'm assuming Dirk gets away with the knee because it's a fadeaway?
so i highlighted some things that i think have almost nothing to do with what we saw in that video. what i saw was lowry go into his shot fading away and the defender jumped into him trying to block the ball. lowry did not pump fake then lean into him (the pierce move which is a completely different move/play and they actually have improved tremendously with that call). secondly how can you say lowry initiated the contact? im sure you will all reference that leg twitch/movement. he didnt stick it out to the side ala miller to clip the defender, the defender literally jumped into him and would of hit him regardless of the leg movement. look at the upper body. Lowry is a baller and made a clutch shot to bring his team back. free throw or not that shot changed the game and ultimately would of put a better basketball product on the court. the technical is just  ::). so the ref chose to ruin the game instead of letting the players handle it. it was either 3 and 1 or just a crazy good shot followed by a Kings timeout to collect their wits. i rest my case.

Not that you'd know it by watching the games.

THE WORST!
i can see how as a person watching the game might not catch those all the time but a ref in the nba that should be the easiest call to make. the only time that should be a tough call is when the ball goes deep post and theres a lot of bodies. smh i think cory spaghetti (maggetti how ever you spell it) had a bad one.

LeBron got a tech last night for the runaway showboating too. Hes been t'd for it before but he does it a lot and doesn't always get called for it... could be the ref doing the calling at that time, some let him get away wit it while others are probably tired of it and call it.

Gay goes past him if his legs aren't extended, that's an offensive foul... intentions don't matter with that rule, IIRC.
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

The worse call I have ever seen was last night when they called a trip on Pressy and was at least 10' away from the guy. ::)
