The coach needs to fit the players on the team.  So whatever the players are is what the coach needs to be.  The truly great coaches have figured that out.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Celtics generally tend to field  same type of team as the Pacers. Are now. Real coaches ,  team players ,  not glamor ball.....star talent ..but good guys ....not show off  basketball ( Melo and Howard) .......  Grass roots old school basketball.

I think Stevens is a real coach like Vogel .   Not a weirdo like Jackson or a ego manager like Doc.

NBA players think they know everything and don't need coaching ...but that's soooooo untrue for 99% of them......only one LBJ and CP3 in the league .

I don't think Danny wants to have players like Melo and Howard on the team as they are a huge pain and distraction  from building a Pacers type of franchise .

Danny will buy , sell and trade till he gets the right set of players to go with his coach .

Good for him.

This.  I was just going to say this, and I agree 100 percent.   A good coach is flexible to tailor his game plan to the players skill sets.

Now that we've had a few months, maybe we have an idea of what sort of roster fits into the Brad Stevens coaching philosophy.

The MarShon Brooks experience strongly suggests to me that a no-defense, offense-only player is probably a bad target to bring in, especially if he is an inefficient iso-ball scorer.

The Gerald Wallace experience mildly suggests to me that it might make sense to avoid a strong-willed veteran set in his ways who might have problems respecting a relatively young and inexperienced coach who never played in the NBA until Stevens builds up a reputation around the league.

The Jordan Crawford experience suggests to me that maybe it isn't such a great idea to bring in every headcase under the premise that Stevens can teach them.

Brad Stevens turned Jordan Crawford from a scrub into a tradeable asset.  He did a wonderful job with Crawford.

Aside from that, he's about team ball and solid fundamentals, so most me-first improvisational guys probably wouldn't fare too well with him (which is why I'd caution against wishing for Melo too hard).

His best teams at Butler revolved around strong team play and a guard who can create (either Gordon Hayward or Shelvin Mack).  I've never actually seen him with a dominant big man, so I actually don't know how he'd do with one.
I think he could get away with having a melo only because rondo would control the offense anyway. And at the college level he got away with hayward not so sure about the nba though.

In this system i think an athletic center would fit perfect with our pick and roll defense. Asik actually moves his feet well enough to step up on those picks but sanders or embiid would realy shut down guards from thowing up floaters.

For our offense i think some shooters that can defend would fit perfect. Bradleys a perfect fit already and melo we could get away with the right pieces on defense
