I'd do it in the blink of an eye.  A lottery pick, another draft pick, and Otto Porter for Rondo and Green?  Plus we dump Wallace's and Bass' deals?

That's pretty close to the ideal rebuilding trade.  I'm sympathetic to Faf's concern, but having too many draft picks is a good problem to have.
This...and a TP for Chris.

I would have some of the guys we have than this pile of trash and unproven draft picks.  There is a real good chance some of those picks will not be as good as RR or Green.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
Would pass.

I understand we are rebuilding and we are getting assets, but they are unproven assets.

Any deal that will involve Rondo should at least involve another All Star or a young up and comer. I don't see Harkless or Porter as those guys, not yet at least.

I'd rather keep my All Star PG along with the already plenty assets I have than trade him for more assets and uncertainty. Unless of course I'm getting another All Star in return, or a guy who's young and is close to being an all star.
2019 CStrong Historical Draft 2000s OKC Thunder.
PG: Jrue Holiday / Isaiah Thomas / Larry Hughes
SG: Paul George / Aaron McKie / Bradley Beal
SF: Paul Pierce / Tayshaun Prince / Brian Scalabrine
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge / Shareef Abdur-Raheem / Ben Simmons
C: Jermaine O'neal / Ben Wallace

Unless an allstar or a top 5 draft pick is coming back in this coming draft, I would not trade Rondo.

If he returns to his normal health (which so far, appears very possible), he is a top 20 player in the NBA. Those guys are very hard to land. But when you have one, your team is more likely to be a desired location for another.

My ideal plan would be:

1. keep Rondo long term

2. hopefully draft a guy in this 2014 draft with top 20 potential

3. Make a run at a playoff spot next year with Rondo at the helm. If you miss the playoffs, fine. Draft a guy in the 9-16 range in 2015. Keep managing the cap.

4. then do what you can (trades, cap room) to try to lure Kevin Love, Aldridge, Brook Lopez, Hibbert, Al Horford, Joakim Noah.... or dare I say.... Kevin Durant when they approach their 2015 or 2016 free agency. In particular, I would not be surprised if Love, Aldrige, Horford and Durant will be looking for a change of scenery by then.

5. Meanwhile the C's will have developed Sully, Olynyk or Faverani into a 5th man.

It is possible that the Celtics could have a legit core in 2 or 3 years.

Back on topic, I think that the proposed trade makes Orlando a playoff team. Or at least moves them out of the top 10 in the draft. Rondo for lets say a 12th and 18th pick, isn't worth it to me.

Also if Orlando believes Rondo is mostly done for the year, and they are high lottery bound, i can't see them making this deal.

I just have trouble giving up Rondo for such unknown quantities of mystery draft picks in a mystery location.

I do too.  And I think I would turn this trade down myself because of that.  But, I figured it was worth discussion, because it does put Danny in a VERY interesting position.

Suddenly this would be the C's roster:

Sully
Olynyk
Bradley
Porter
Harkless
Fav
Vesely (expiring)
Lee
Pressey
Brooks (expiring)
Humphries (expiring)
Bogans (expiring)
Ariza (expiring)

2014 - 4 first rounders
2015 - 2 first rounders
2016 - 2 first rounders
2017 - Option of swapping first rounders
2018 - 2 first rounders

That is a LOT to work with.  It is also a HUGE risk to not have any elite level talent on the team.

This is exactly what I was thinking in the other thread. I'd be all in on this idea. Fact is that when the experiment doesn't look like it is working and Rondo leaves we will all be wishing we had traded him when we could. I have to believe that with 11 first rounders in the next 5 years that we will hit on 3-4 of them and possibly even end up with a franchise guy. I like the upside versus a greater likelihood of mediocrity which is what we face now.

Yeah I'd do this trade in a blink as well.  It's like a crazy ideal situation.

agree that:

~ this is a no-brainer for the Cs

~ Orlando's interest in this is the least clear -- especially considering this smells more like an Otis Smith move, not a Rob Hennigan move.

that said: like the concept, Chris. TP.
