  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
At this point in time, waiting a year and seeing what can be done next summer is preferable to giving up anything of value before the season starts.  I have yet to hear a compelling argument for why the Celtics need to prioritize dumping his contract over other concerns.

I agree with this.

I have very little hope that Wallace will ever become a viable starter again, though.  He's declined in points scored (per game and on a per-minute basis) for four seasons in a row.  We've seen a similar downward trajectory in terms of FG%, TS%, and TRB%.  I'm not sure that many players turn around trends like that.

As I mentioned earlier, Gwall's minutes per games also declined at the same pace Roy.  The PG's Gerald played with in Portland (Andre Miller) and Brooklyn (Deron) are both mostly shoot first PG's, not pure PGs like Rondo.

The percentage / rate stats aren't influenced by minutes played, and his per-minute scoring production has gone down.

Per-36 minute scoring numbers: 16.0 -> 14.9 -> 13.9 -> 9.2

As for Deron's point guard skills, he's ranked in the top-five in assists per game seven different times, including the top-three five times.  I think it's hard to suggest a guy like that isn't finding looks for his teammates.

Similarly, I don't think Andre Miller is regarded as a selfish point guard.  He's been top-ten in assists eight different times, including leading the league once.

I admire Crash's career, but I think he's pretty much cooked.

Haha, I agree with this. Using Deron and Andre as examples of pgs who don't pass is a rough argument to make.

I know you don't think he will have a major resurgence, but don't you think there is a pretty good chance he can improve on last year? I mean, he was epically bad. If over 25 mpg, he averaged 10/4/2 with his continued hard-nosed defense, he should have some value next year on a 2 year deal.

I actually would love to have Wallace on this team if we were contending. Right now, I hope he can just play solidly and increase his trade value.

I'm all for letting him try having a bounce back year with Stevens playing towards his strengths.  I'm hopeful that instead of heavy minutes and playing 15 to 20 mpg backing up Green he will have fresher legs against second units.

There have been plenty of players  that turned into valuable limited minutes role players as they got into their 30s instead of heavy minutes.  Mike Miller is a recent example, and a name that just came to me from years ago Ron Harper.

If Wallace does that then just maybe he won't have negative value in a trade starting next summer when he'll have 2 years left in his deal.

I guess another way for the Celtics to look at Gerald Wallace at this stage is, "Will he be a better or more productive bench asset than Bass?"

Do we want to keep one more than the other for the next few years?

He may be more versastile and a better defender although the scoring isnt quite there.

I surely wouldnt want them both on the court together, there is some redundancy IMO.

Personally, I'm just very interested in seeing how he fits with the Celtics. But other than that, Cash + heavily protected 2nd rounder. Otherwise, Nothing. OK, Fab and Crawford also... and Bass.

Andre average 7 assists that year.  Hardly near the top of the league.  Also, Gwall went from being a primary option in Charlotte to a third option in Portland and perhaps a 5th option in Brooklyn.  Deron averaged 7.7 assists, which was by far his LOW in his last 6 seasons!!

Deron has averaged taking 15, 17.47, and 14.41 shots per game over the last three years for an average of 15.63 shots attempted per game.

Rondo has averaged taking 9.85, 10.79, and 12.24 shots per game over the last three years for an average of 10.96 shots attempted per game.

That is a HUGE difference Roy.

I will take 11.2, 11.7, and 11.1 assists the last three years with far fewer shot attempts over Deron any day of the week!!

I agree with the consensus of not giving any asset to get rid of bad contracts. I think DA is not going to give any valuable piece to clean the books, more like he'll be willing to take on another bad contract or two if that means acquiring more picks/prospects. At least I hope so. We can afford contracts that expire in 2015, as we are not players in the 2014 Free Agency.
