Why is the prospect of landing a really good part this year and maybe another next and maybe another the year after through sign and trades or regular trades and sending out 1st round picks in return for them so distasteful for people?

Is it so bad if we land Smith this off season and then maybe trade for LaMarcus Aldridge the off season after or during next season? Or getting DeMarcus Cousins in a sign and trade in the 2014 off season instead of LMA?

Is it so bad to think that trades and sign and trades will happen to make this team a contender again over a two year period of mediocrity rather than trying to do what Danny did in 2007 which was turn around a franchise in one month or tanking into oblivion hoping to land that less than 1-2% chance at a franchise player and waiting 4-6 years before he is ready to turn this team into a contender, that is, if he decides to re-up with the team after he is off his rookie contract?

There is a pretty bizarre fascination with tanking on this blog, isn't there?

I tend to favor your method - and wonder, frankly, why we got to this point without following it.

  • Eagerly Awaiting the Next Fantasy Draft
Detroit seems to believe he can start at SF and then slide to the 4 for stretches as well. I'm guessing they also are thinking of breaking up Drummond/Monroe potentially if they acquire Smith.
If the C's could get Drummond or Monroe for Rondo I think that would represent the best value possible for Rajon.
See the issue with that is I don't think Detroit knows which of Monroe/Drummond they want to keep yet.

Drummond seems to have the most potential, but he just hurt his back and was a limited minutes garbage man and rebounding machine. Need more time to properly evaluate his development is my guess.
I don't think Smith will be happy waiting around while they decide. In order to sign there I think he would want the starting four position all to himself and the Pistons to bring in someone who fits with him rather than keep a piece to back him up.

Who would you personally rather have Drummond or Monroe?
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

I think Monroe is the safer bet as he is light years beyond Drummond on the offensive side.

However, Drummond has probably much more potential and is still on his rookie deal for 3 more years while Monroe is an UFA next summer.

I think I'd have to pick Drummond but I bet Detroit hangs on to Drummond.

Tough call for me. Assuming his back injury was a one time thing I'll say Drummond. Too much athletic talent, bigger difference maker on the on glass and defensively "potentially".

I just don't think Monroe will work as PF overall. And I'm not a huge fan of offensive minded shaky D centers.

Hopefully, we can convince Smith to come to Boston within the next few days, therefore giving us an opportunity to at least talk to Dwight.

Get Rondo and Smith in Howard's ear, and convince him to force the Lakers hand.  Boston could offer LA at minimium 4 1st round picks.

I'd salivate over Howard/Smith/Rondo core.

if possible I would do it, but Howard and Josh both tries to command max contracts. I don't think we have enough assets to net us both

I'll admit, it's mostly a pipe-dream of mine.  But I'd rather dream about that than the thought of tanking.

Anecdotally, there's probably a better chance of this happening than landing a "bonafide superstar" in 2014 draft (although according to pro-tankers, there are 15 franchise players in this draft). I'd prefer to put all my eggs in this basket, rather than sucking on purpose.

Even if you just got Smith the odds of adding one more good player to a Rondo/Smith/Green/Sully group is substantially better than the odds of building a team from scratch.

Mark this on your calendar, but I completely agree with this.

would be pretty interesting to land a player like Monroe or Drummond. Although Rondo is Rondo so it's osmething to mull over.

Anyway, it seems like Dwight is headed to Houston. if Smith comes here... that seems okay. we'd definitely make the playoffs. I just hope DA has more up his sleeve. I don't want us to be the new Hawks. being first round fodder is definitely worse than being one of the bad teams in the league, imo. capped out and with only first round potential, that's gonna suck. at least if the team is one of the worst, they stand a chance at getting great talent via draft and becoming relevant again.

I love Drummond.  Health issue year one, sure, but he is the closest player to Shawn Kemp that I have seen since the man himself.  A lot of potential.

However, if you go to a Detroit Pistons forum, they're all pretty convinced they can pry Rondo away with a package of Brandon Knight and Rodney Stuckey.

If that's what we are getting back I would want at least two first included.

Sounds like how we operate here most of the time  :P

The only player they have I really like is Drummond.  So there better be picks or something in an offer from them to make me even look at it.

Because I enjoy a different perspective. RealGM has a trade forum that incorporates fans from all 30 NBA teams.

It's usually filled with "Your players are all scrubs and our players are way more valuable!" type talk.

Some of the trade ideas are humorous.

Rondo, Bradley, Green, Sullinger, and Smith sounds pretty good to me...
