Option #1 would not be a true contender.  I think at best we'd hope that they could compete for a top 4 seed in the East, but more likely they'd be what Atlanta, Brooklyn, or Chicago were this season.

Rondo and Sully come back healthy, make your FA a decent big, possibly trade Bass and Lee or Bradley for something of an upgrade to Bass and you're probably fringe contenders. Not as exciting as being "true contenders" but IMO preferable to a headlong rush to the bottom of the pile.

I see teams like the Nuggets, Warriors, Clippers, Grizzlies, Knicks, Pacers as fringe contenders.  That's kind of just the state of the league with the Heat and Thunder being so loaded with talent.

I think absolutely everything would have to go right for the Celtics to improve enough and be healthy enough to be included in the above group this time next season.

Ok, realistic contenders but not favorites then. I'm talking about "if we play our best and the ball bounces our way we can win", IMO you're saying "if we play our best and multiple teams are struck with injuries we can win".

Sure, I get what you're saying.  I think to even be in that position, though -- that we could win if other teams have some injuries -- the Celtics would need to have absolutely everything go right for them.  Main guys all healthy, players all clicking, etc.

Even then, dollars to donuts this team loses in the second round or maybe the conference finals.  That's not really worth it to me, so I'd rather the team just start the dirty business of rebuilding sooner rather than later, especially because the 2014 draft is so stacked.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.
