Ray Allen has played a lot of minutes at the 3 since he came to Boston.

No he didn't, not really.  As per 82games, he played 59% of the available SG minutes last year, and only 3% of the SF minutes.  Similar breakdown the year before; 67% of the SG minutes, 4% of the SF minutes (and 1% of the PG minutes).

The third-string SF will be Courtney Lee, who's had a similar lack of experience at the SF position but who can probably get by against most teams.

As to Christmas/Joseph, it'll be a fair competition for one roster spot.  I doubt a $250k guarantee will make much difference in the end.  If Kris Joseph shows that he's the better prospect and especially if he shows he could be a depth-SF who could hold his own if Pierce/Green got hurt.  But if Christmas shows that he's better, Joseph's status as a draft pick isn't going to save him.

Was checking Shamsports and it says Dionte Christmas has 50% guaranteed minimum salary ( 236,802 $) with no guarantee date.
Kris Joseph is fully unguaranteed, so it doesnt make sense to waive someone who makes over 200 k and keep another player making the double ( even if he is fully non guaranteed and with no guarantee date set). Don't know how this is possible with the CBA, this sucks for players to go through this.

Jamar Smith is guaranteed 25 k, don't see the need to add his salary against the cap.

If anyone here that is more of an expert regarding vet minimum contracts,2nd rounders and if they count against the apron 74.3 million ?

Dionte had to get that kind of offer, since he said no to a lot of money in Europe just to come into camp. He was signed before Danny had the chance to sign Courtney Lee. While we have more money invested in him, I don't think it has much effect on whether we keep Joseph or not.

And since Dooling just got waived, it looks like both of them will stay, at least for now.

The Courtney Lee trade officially happened on July 20th, and Christmas signed his contract on July 31st.  They obviously had an agreement with Christmas to come to camp before then, but he wasn't signed to anything official until after the Lee deal was done.

And, what's your source for Dooling being waived?  That makes absolutely no sense; why would you waive him before camp even begins?  That's nonsensical.

EDIT: Looks like he's retiring.  Weird.  I'd still feel a lot better if he was around even if it meant that Joseph (or Christmas) was not.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
I'd say they keep Joseph and probably cut Christmas.
Dooling has now been waived so Joseph's chances just went up a bunch- he can handle the rock and play point forward ALA Paul Pierce.
I doubt he gets cut to be honest.
They'll want him as a trade throw in if anything when mid season deadline approaches.
Him, Fab, Bass, Avery and even Jeff Green will all probably be up for grabs particularly if Smith gets serious about leaving Atlanta.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Hmm... don't know how I missed, that Lee was sign-and-traded even before the reported signing of Christmas. But I guess they had some sort of deal in the works since Summer League.

I think Joseph is safe but Smith and Christmas are not.   Darko also means Fab may be heading to the D league.

Well for now, both can be safe without Dools...
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

Cutting Kris Joseph might be a big mistake. He's 2 inches taller than Xmass and XLee, and outweighs them by 12-17 pounds. He also has a much longer wingspan, 6'11" or more I believe.

It'd be pretty silly to lose to the Heat if Pierce or Green get hobbled, because Lebron was being guarded by some 6'5" guard for meaningful minutes.

Christmas could get cut while still being the better player than Joseph. We also shouldn't overrate the summer league performances of shooting 2 guards. Let's see what they show in training camp.

Going into the season with only 2 small forwards including Pierce is insane. Calling a 6'5" 200-205 pound guard like Christmas or Lee a capable SF is equally insane.

Joseph has a lot going for him just because of the way Danny shaped the roster.

I could almost see Dooling or Collins or Darko getting cut if Christmas or Melo shines well enough.

Joseph would have to play poorly and tentatively to get cut, unless an equally bit and athletic SF can be brought in to at least guard the SF position.

Maybe Joseph gets cut and a trade for a real SF is made before the deadline?

I seen it, kinda, before it happened.

I should get a cape and a wizard hat, and a T-shirt that says, "I kinda predicted Dooling's departure."

Then people will pay me money to pick stocks and horse races.

Everybody knows Keyon Dooling. I'm gonna milk this cash cow for all it's worth.

What she said.

I expect both Dionte Christmas and Kris Joseph to be members of the Boston Celtics to start the season.  It's not an either/or situation.
DKC Seventy-Sixers:

PG: G. Hill/D. Schroder
SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

It's a little bit confusing, but from what I can tell:

* If fully guaranteed, a rookie deal counts at least $854k against the apron, even if they actually make less than that; and

* If partially guaranteed, only the guaranteed amount counts against the apron.

tp

I read chris forsberg quoting Larry Coon saying Doolings 854389 might still count against the cap, is that true ?

The nice people in the ESPN comments section says yes.

(98% of the people there are jerks. But if you go on the Celtics only articles the comments section it's pretty darn good. Best fans.)

Non drafted camp invites are always in a more precarious position than drafted.   But a second rounder is not protected still I think Joseph's talent will win out and us to look for table scraps.   I like Christmas, he is a tough kid but the odds are long.
