Here is an article on why Ronnie Brewer went to the Bulls from Adrian Wojnarowski and Marc Spears...
Free-agent buzz: Bulls signing Brewer
Ronnie Brewer has decided to sign a three-year, $12.5 million contract with the Chicago Bulls over going to the Boston Celtics in a possible sign-and-trade, the free-agent guard told Yahoo! Sports.
Brewer said the luxury tax hampered the Celtics as they tried to acquire him in a sign-and-trade from the Memphis Grizzlies for Tony Allen. Allen had previously decided to sign with the Grizzlies, in a similar deal financially.
Considering that Brewer would have come off the bench for Boston behind Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, he was more intrigued about the possibility of starting for the Bulls at shooting guard and re-joining former Utah Jazz teammates Carlos Boozer and Kyle Korver there. Brewer, whose contract includes possible incentive bonuses, said he plans to sign the deal early next week and that Utah never made a strong attempt to try to get him back.
Brewer’s agreement was first reported by bulls.com.
“It came down to Chicago and Boston,” Brewer told Yahoo! Sports. “I’m fairly young and I got an opportunity to start in Chicago. Both are great cities, storied programs. It came down to where I could excel more. With the young Bulls, I like their style of play and I get to play with Derrick Rose.”
Brewer averaged 13.7 points and 3.7 rebounds with the Jazz during the 2008-09 season. But with the emergence of Wesley Matthews early last season and a need to get under the luxury-tax threshold, the Jazz traded him to the Grizzlies for a protected 2011 first-round pick on Feb. 18. Brewer only played in five games with Memphis before suffering a hamstring injury. He says his hamstring is now 100 percent.
Brewer became an unrestricted free agent after Memphis declined to make him a qualifying offer.
“I got a chip on my shoulder to prove myself to the Bulls and everyone else,” Brewer said. “We’ll have a great team.”
Why am I resuscitating this long-dead thread?
The Bulls have declined their option on Ronnie Brewer today, making him an unrestricted free agent.
https://twitter.com/KCJHoopBrewer passed up a chance to play for Boston to join the Bulls, ostensibly for a starting gig.
He started one game for the Bulls in his first year there.
Last season, he started 43 of 66 games, due to the fact that Rip Hamilton couldn't stay healthy (when he did suit up, Rip started 28 of 28 games).
I wonder how things might have been different, for Brewer and for the Celtics, if he had accepted the Celtics offer (via the S&T for Tony Allen).
