I dont see what the big deal is.  I mean...Do you guys all pay the full MSRP for the cars you buy too?  These are just the initial asking prices.  It would make no sense for a player to initially ask for a price he thought was fair value...that would undermine the whole negotiation.  You ask for 20, receive a counter offer of 13, and finally settle at 14-15, where both sides are relatively happy.  If I was Chandler, and my agent opened the bidding at 14mil a year I'd fire him immediately.

this is the kind of thinking that caused us all to miss the first month and a half of the nba season

That's about $1 million for every combined point and rebound per game he gets (10/9). No way.

The year before last he was 6/6--$20 million would be almost TWO million per point/rebound. Career averages about 8/8.

It's one thing to "test the market"; it's another to be a fool.

I wonder if Perk is upset he took OKC's extension offer now.  He'll be making just over $8 million per year, and he's only slightly below Chandler's caliber as a player (and in my mind, a better defender.  Heck, even hobbled last year, Perk statistically equaled Chandler's defense, according to mysynergysports.com)

Co-sign...TP

Chandler is not worth a penny more than 10 mil per year.

He should be looking at Perkins contract and go from there.

The guy plays defense and rebounds...nothing else.

Its a new NBA...hopefully the system works and he doesnt get over paid.

Heck I dont fault the guy for asking though!

give him 21 mil

sign him for a year

but in his contract what ever team picks him up he needs to sign on the dotted line a guaranteed  championship if not he dont get paid..

he thinks he worth that much prove it..

That would be amazing.

Could you imagine how competitve this league would be if number of wins determined their salaries!!!

It's also the line of thinking that any for-profit business is based on.  To think otherwise would be naive.  What something is "worth" is completely subjective.  The market dictates that somethings "worth," is what another person is willing to pay for it.

And you can't just say "well...I'll just move on and get Nene for a little over half that", because the same article indicates Nenes asking price as 17.7 million.  The players worth or expectations, have nothing to do with this.  Its just basic negotiating.  You could say thats what caused the lockouts extension, but one could just as easily say, that the casual fans lack of business sensibilities, is what caused the uproar over it.  Just a different perspective.

So for Dallas to get enough cap space in 2012 to sign a max contract free agent, while keeping Tyson Chandler, they would likely have to:

(1) Not resign Jason Terry, Caron Butler or JJ Barea
(2) Amnesty Brendan Haywood next summer
(3) Use the stretch exception on Shawn Marion next summer
(4) Trade Rodrigue Beaubois, Corey Brewer and Dominique Jones while taking back no contracts that last beyond this season.

That would leave them with Dirk Nowitzki ($20.9mil), Tyson Chandler (say $12mil), the ghost of Shawn Marion's contract ($3.5mil) and 10 cap holds for empty roster spots at $500k apiece.

That would give them a team with Chris Paul or Deron Williams, Dirk Nowitzki and Tyson Chandler ... or ... Dwight Howard, Dirk Nowitzki and a solid perimeter player that they trade Tyson Chandler for (say Gerald Wallace). And then that $2.5mil exception and minimum contracts to round out the team.

That is a lot of talent to part ways with for only a decent shot at landing a top name.

Maybe Ainge should be happier that he traded Perk, if you think he can be more sure that Perkins would have been offered a ridiculous contract that the Celtics would have been stupid to try to match.

Eh...  At the very least, the Celtics could have walked away with a large trade exception, and probably some draft picks, through a S&T. I still would have taken a shot at a title.  They're so rare in this league that sacrificing a legit shot for future considerations is a very poor decision.
