The really brutal thing is looking at Tony's deal with Memphis. 3 years, 10 million.

I think Nate had a 1 year deal for $4M, JO was 2 years for 12M, and Jeff Green is going to cost $6M for next year.
Boston offered similar money to TA i believe.

I don't know why we didn't offer the third year he's young and is most likely what Danny is now going to try and go look for a one on one wing defender. It backfired and we paid the price for it I wouldn't doubt if he's laughing to the bank.

Yes, this is how I understood it as well. I think we lost Tony rather than him leaving us.

That Tony asked for $10 mil over three years, Ainge balked at the 3rd year and TA said I'm going with Memphis then.

For me, I would not have hesitated giving TA three seasons at $4 Mil is necessary and I wold have tired to close in a hurry.

Also, based on the value I see in Tony as a wing defender, and enforcer for you on the wing...if it was a matter of starting, I might have approached Ray and said it's time to transition...it would have been good for Ray's career anyway, minutes wise.

I think there was a way to keep Tony but we didn't.

TA didn't want to resign with Boston. Wanted to get out of the shadow of the big 3.  So there was no way that he would have played in Boston this year ( unless perhaps they offered him a rediculous amount of money, like twice what he's making now).

We lost TA, but nobody in the organisation can be blamed for that.

Sure they can.  TA's agent offered Boston a chance to match the contract Memphis offered.  The Big 3 and money had nothing really to do with it, it was just longevity.  Memphis offered 3 years, Ainge only offered 2 years.

He earned more playing time with splendid defensive play, and that continued into the postseason when he helped contain superstars LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. With the Celtics desperately needing defense and youth, re-signing Allen would seem to have been a major priority.

But his negotiations were pushed back and Allen’s agent, Michael Higgins, last week appeared befuddled that the Celtics weren’t more aggressive. The Celtics didn’t begin seriously talking numbers with Allen until a few days ago and Wallace swept in with a guaranteed third year and more than $3 million per season, a modest raise from $2.5 million in 2009-10.

The Celtics now must find a veteran defender at a low price because they are over the salary cap.

Danny is not the best GM when it comes to handling contract negotiations.

We could have signed TA easily...he was already getting paid 2.5 million when he was with us.

Right.  The only issue was the 3rd year.  I mean it was only a .5 million dollar raise.  It wasn't really breaking the bank.  Playing time wasn't an issue as at the time Memphis had Mayo and Gay to start and get all the minutes.  Yes, TA's defense eventually helped him take minutes away from Mayo, but during the off-season that wasn't expected.  I'm not sure Perk would have put us over the top to win it, I mean it's a tough thing to judge, but I am glad we got something in return for him.  Ainge was never going to give him 4 years at 9 mil a pop.

I thought it wasn't a money issue and Allen wanted an expanded role in Memphis. At least he went on babbling about having a chance to do more in Memphis.

First time I hear that whole third year stuff.

He was leaving Boston to have the exact same role in Memphis, the first guard off the bench.  It ended up being an expanded role because Gay got hurt and Hollins end up chosing to go with TA as a starter with Mayo off the bench, but that wasn't expected when he signed. TA only played 20 minutes per game this year, only about a 4 minute increase from last year.

He probably should have overpayed him for two years.

It probably would have made the most sense from a flexibility standpoint.  Basically, it would have taken a Nate Robinson level contract to get him Memphis money in two years.

I agree re Perkins for 4 year at $9. I wouldn't do it. At the end of that contract he'd be a 12 year Vet with major knee surgery.

I say this even as much as I loved Perkins in a Celtics uni. I think we could get the same production out of stop gap centers for less money.
