Reggie was 6-7 and that is enough to make things harder on his foes.  Especially if you can match footspeed with your opponent and don't get bulled out of the way, if you can do that and have length then you can cause them problems.  Just hsving the kahunas to oppose Jordan took some moxy.

Roy,

I respect you in many ways, but Lewis an "elite defender??"  Did Reggie ever make the All-Defensive team??

Lewis' competition at guard on those all-defensive teams included Joe Dumars, John Stockton, Michael Jordan, Dan Majerle, and Alvin Robertson.  All of those guys are in the "elite" category, and so was Reggie.

Reggie is in a very exclusive category of guards who have had 100 steals and 100 blocks in the same season, and he's one of two guards in the past 20 years to have averaged more than a block per game in consecutive seasons (which he did three years in a row).

Lewis never made all defensive because he wasn't on their level.  Jordan, Dumars and Robertson were great defenders at the shooting guard position. They deserved to make the team over Reggie because they were better defenders. They were elite and he was not. IMO

Robertson was amazing. Avg 3+ steals in multiple seasons, almost 4 a game one year and was a career 48% fg shooter. Very solid from 3 as well.

"Elite", "excellent"....

Aren't we talking semantics here?

Regardless, I think almost everyone who actually have seen tape and read up on Reggie Lewis can state that he was certainly an above average defender.  Tough to dispute that notion.

Rondo2287,

It is great that he blocked Jordan 4 times.  That being said, a video montage should really not even enter a decent debate.  Jordan averaged 36/6/6 and shot 54% vs. us.  Elite defense?? Hardly.

Roy,

Reggie was probably the tallest and longest starting shooting guard in the league at the time.  He should have led the league in blocks.  I am NOT saying that Reggie was a poor defender, simply that he was not an "elite" defender.

P.S.  Reggie left this world early due to cocaine.  This is sad, but he did things to his body that took him away from us early.  We should never lose sight of this lesson regarding the dangers of drugs.

It's best not to state rumor and speculation as fact.  As I recall, the autopsy results were that the damage to Reggie's heart wasn't caused by cocaine use, but this ugly rumor lives on.

Sorry if I offended anyone, but I just choose to not live in denial.  I loved Reggie as a player like anyone else, but come on Roy.

Again:  don't state rumors as fact.  You're entitled to your belief that Reggie died because he was a cokehead, but that's never been proven.  The only time the issue was looked at medically, the opposite was concluded.

It was never proven but the more information I've read points to cocaine use. If I remember correctly he refused to take a drug test.  I've also heard from someone who currently works with his doctor,Dr. Mudge, that he insists Reggie was a drug user. Reggie seemed like a wholesome guy, I never would have imagined he was using drugs at the time but who knows. I don't really care anymore.

I never believed that his death was related to coke.  It stays in your system for 5-10 days.  Rich "coke-heads", especially those who take enough to cause major health problems, could never resist the temptation for 5 days.  If he was a cocaine addict, they would have found it in his autopsy.

I hate this myth.

Alleged use of cocaine.  One reporter, Jackie McMullin, opened up that window based on one crackhead's report that he had done drugs with Reggie.  It wasn't confirmed in the autopsy, if I remember right...and this is only on memory...  I think Jackie is a terrific writer, but since then have always taken her reporting with a grain of salt.  That is just what I think....you will believe what you want, and we will never know the truth now.
