Boston hasn't hosted all star game since 1964, what gives?

If I remember correctly it has something to do with the "convention center area" capacity or sq ft of that section of the Garden.

The NBA prereqs for an All Star game require for slightly more then what the Garden has.

This came up when that building was originally being built but was never changed.  This NBA rule...may or may not changed but that was the original reason why we didn't get one in the first few years of the new building.

Don't the Bruins own the building? I think that'd limit their profits from the game.

ASG's are also used to reward places that have new arenas, so that's a factor.

Boston is the Mecca of Basketball.
The Basketball Hall of Fame is in Springfield.
TD Bank owns the Garden.
And it is absurd to think that there hasn't been an All-Star Game here since 1964.

In a sense, outrageous to any real basketball fan.

What's next, no guitars in the Rock N Roll hall of fame?

I'm guessing some of you are either naïve or are just inflicted with homerism.

This is very simple folks.  The NBA is a business, holding an ASG in a city like Boston is bad business.  There is just no way there is as much money to be made having the game in Boston, as there would be in certain other cities.

I could see the NBA maybe giving Boston an ASG out of recognition for its success as an NBA franchise, but the NBA would be losing money by doing so.

NBA teams must apply to host the All-Star game. The league has a list of specifications that must be met for cities to host the game. The Bucks have not applied to host the game because Milwaukee has not met the NBA's All-Star Game specifications in recent years, Steinmiller said.
The biggest problem is that Milwaukee needs more hotel rooms in the downtown area, he said.
Steinmiller said he couldn't remember how many more hotel rooms Milwaukee needs in the downtown area to get the NBA All-Star Game but, "it's a significant number," he said.


If Milwaukee is ever able to meet the NBA's specifications for the All-Star game the Bucks will apply to host the event, Steinmiller said.

I looked, but couldn't find the exact specifications anywhere, it would be interesting to see though.

And to end it all, here's a list of all the cities to host an All-Star game.  Last few years have been warm cities, but Denver, D.C., Philly, New York, Cleveland, and even Minny have all hosted the game in the last 20 years.  (Although what I think we've seen over the last 5 years is more of the trend we'll be seeing going forward).

This is what stands out to me from this list.  NY, the biggest city in all of the country, has not had a game in 10+ years.  Chicago, the 3rd biggest city in all of thr country, has not had one since 88', despite the fact the United Center is a spectacular building and has yet to host an ASG.

This right here tells me how good the chances Boston has of getting a game. Slim and none.

Well, there's a much higher risk of a blizzard/ice storm turning the weekend into a travel nightmare. 

I'm sure the people that come don't mind some nicer weather too, but the NBA wants to make sure the event can go off as planned. 

But if they can give it to Minny and Cleveland I don't know why they can't send it to Boston 1 out of every 50 years.

Boston is cold, boring, and has a small arena.  Not a much of a surprise they haven't hosted an ASG.

I love Boston, and the C's of course.  But wouldn't you rather go to Miami, Orlando, LA, Phoenix, etc.. before a cold city like Boston?

My thoughts exactly, even our own players like going on the road during winter in Boston.

I count 22 cold weather cities among the last 46 All Star games since 1964. That is basically an even split. Philly has had it 3 times, Denver, NY, and Chicago have all had it twice since our last time. I think that it is disrespectful to Boston, We deserve better. I know that Red only cared about winning titles, but 46 years? It makes no sense to me.
