Andrew Bynum will not play tonight against the Rockets, after a MRI revealed a bone bruise in his left knee. He is now listed as day-to-day.

Welp, that answers the thread title nicely.
Not really. I assume a bone bruise is result of a knee banging incident -- something that could happen to anyone and not related to his 'bad knees'. Correct? This would then have nothing to do with him staying healthy in the longer term. Good news for Lakers I would think (unless a bone buise is something worse than I think it is).
Bone bruises can occur internally without any contact with an external object. It is quite common for the patella (kneecap) to bruise by banging/rubbing against the femur when the kneecap is out of alignment.
If I had to guess, I'd say that this is what happened to Bynum. He is moving awkwardly due to the injury in the right knee, and his left knee is probably behaving improperly too. He's had that left knee scoped in the past too, so it's probably prone to such injury because it's missing cartilage.
Yup, it's less the specific injury so much as the indication that he's overcompensating for the last injury and causing more damage. His body is like Greg Oden Lite at this point, the breakdowns are frequent and it's getting harder for him to successfully recover.
