Another ex-Golden State Binky.

I just don't see the great upside to this years team to make a move for him.

The problem with Randolph is he has good length and "athleticism," yet I wouldn't consider him good at any one aspect of playing basketball. He is a decent rebounder. But he is a terrible shooter, scorer, defender, passer, etc.

Not sure why "athleticism" is in quotes, he is an excellent athlete, especially for his length.  He is very similar to Odom in that respect.  Unfortunately, so far he is consistent only in rebounding and shot blocking.

The problem is he is not a consistent player, but he has shown the ability to shoot, score, defend, and pass all at various points and games.  Look at the above video against the Spurs for example and he has other big games like that.  He was on my fantasy team on Golden State one year and he had some big outburst games.  There simply has not been consistency from him but there also has not been consistent playing time and a decent situation either, so it's hard to judge him.

And again, very young player.

Here are some of his box scores from last year for example (and he missed a lot of that seaosn with injury):

11/9 Min ,W, 146-105

30 mins, 8-14 FG .571 FG PCT  7-8 FT  .875 FT PCT  3 STL 3 BLK   2 TO   2 FL  3 ORB  4 DRB  7 RB  23 PTS

12/5 Orl, L, 126-118

35 mins, 10-23 FG,  .435 FG PCT,  8-9 FT  .889 FT PCT  1 STL  1 BLK  0 TO  4 PF   6  ORB  7 DRB   13 RB  5 AST  28 PTS

12/23 @Nor  L 108-102

36 mins,  5-14 FG  .357 FG PCT,  2-2 FT 1.000 FT PCT  2 STL  8 BLK   1  TO  4 PF   3 ORB  5 DRB  8 RB  2 AST  12 PTS

And I'm cherry picking box scores obviously but those are some impressive, very complete games.  You can find some more here on his game log ( http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/gamelog?playerId=3455&year=2010 ) and you can also see how inconsistent his playing time was there.  He'd go from 36 minutes to 7 minutes the next game in some situations.

Just the fact is that while he has not been a consistent player, he has shown the ability to do everything but shoot threes in his career at times.  He has shown passing, steals, blocks, jump shooting, free throw shooting at a great percentage for his height, great finishing around the rim, offensive and defensive rebounding, and the ability to run the floor like a gazelle at nearly 7'.

Guy has potential, that is for sure.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
Yeah, I'd trade a 1st for Randolph. Our 1st is likely to be in the 26-30 range and I haven't heard jack about the draft so I'm assuming it's weak. He would probably be better than who ever we'd pick up in the draft.

Randolph might end up being Gerald Green 2.0.

We have a title to worry about, Id rather have Garnett more focused on winning banner 18 than guided a raw, potential filled, head case as best he can.

Not sure why he is a head case...  Sure he hasn't quite jumped out the gate and realized his potential but he is very young.  And he was in a terrible situation in Golden State where he had very speroadic playing time.  Nellie seemed to have issues with him but I think as a player I would of had huge issues with Nellie too.

Again, would love him here and think we would handle him very well.  I doubt anything happens with him now but I'd keep an eye on him for a future Rondo pairing.

Headcase really wasnt the right word and its my bad on the lack of clarification... By headcase, i meant that there have been reports and articles out of the Knicks camp that say his work ethic is terrible, hes lazy, and his conditioning isnt the best. He doesnt take the extra time he needs in the gym to become an elite player and that isnt what this C's team is all about. Maybe he is suffering in the Knicks locker room with Curry being around, maybe it is just his nature, or maybe he is just too young to realize the type of work ethic he needs to become something great. So headcase really isnt the right word, I guess lazy would be a better fit?

Okay I'm with you there more.  I mean there has to be something not quite right since he hasn't put everything together consistently with all the potential he has had.

That all being said, he had a bad situation in Golden State so I really don't judge him at all from that.

And though the Knicks situation has been surprising and he must be earning the DNP's to a large extent, I think D'Antoni has had a history of poorly handling young players, especially ones who need motivation and guidance.  Though he didn't earn the PT, maybe if he felt he had more of an opportunity to actually contribute on the floor in a game he would give more effort?  It's kind of like what we have seen from Von Wafer over this season.

Nate Robinson is a great example for the D'Antoni thing.  He buries him on the bench in New York and he's racking up the DNP's and he comes to the Celtics and he contributes, plays hard defense, and fills his role on a championship caliber team.

And though Nate has talent he has no where the potential Anthony Randolph has.  And Nate was older and more mature even. I think if Randolph came to the Celts we would see what we have seen time and time again, he would buy in just like all these guys have.

Also, still have to give him some slack because he is so young.  But the knocks have to be somewhat legitimate, I just don't think it's something to knock him too much for when he has had the absolute disaster that was Golden State and this Knicks situaiton as his only opportunities and pro experience.

In the Knicks blowout against Pheonix he only played 5 minutes.

He has to be out of there soon.

  • Rondo = Good
D'Antoni is not a good coach for young players who need to develop, since he keeps such a short rotation.  I'm guessing since AR can't shoot all that well it's been difficult for him to get into the rotation.
