so somebody tell me how it's possible that Nate gets the foul on this. that may have been the strangest call i've ever seen. a 6'10" guy leans down and forward to smack heads with a 5'9" guy that doesn't move, and the 5'9" guy gets called for a foul. i thought at first they just blew the whistle because they saw blood, but then the replays showed 2 refs with arms raised indicating a foul...strange!!

NBA refs are stupid, that's how.  One thing I really hate is how in pro sports if someone gets hurt, even if the play clearly wasn't a foul, they will call a foul.  This was kind of like that only more confounding because it was a headbutt where both guys got knocked.  They can't just swallow their whistle of course, that would be too logical.

Yeah, that was strange.  Especially where Dunleavy is clearly the one doing the head butting.

I don't blame the refs for this, Nate moved up hard and fast on Dunleavy to body him up and then they hit heads. The offensive player gets the benefit of the doubt in that situation. Especially when it is pretty clearly accidental.

I don't know.  Looked to me like Dunleavy is the one that moved, not Nate.

Well, to be fair, they also called a tripping foul on TJ Ford when Pierce inadvertantly tripped over TJ's foot. But I agree with the general premise that refs suck.

Dunleavy moved his head downward but Nate had just moved out aggressively to body Dunleavy as Dunleavy passed the ball.

I agree with this. It wasn't a foul by Nate, but definitely not a terrible call. The offensive player is going to get the benefit of the doubt there, and the refs had to blow the whistle since both players went down.

Exactly, he didn't even have the ball.  Since when can you not play defense?
Philly:

David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Horrible call.  Should have been a no call and whistled for a blood stoppage.

I'm not saying Nate committed a foul, I'm just pointing out why the foul ended up being called on Nate.

But why Nate?  Dunleavy moved his head towards Nate's head more than Nate moved his head towards Dunleavy.  It looked like Dunleavy was clearly the initiator.

Nate was running out to contest a pass and pick up him. If one player runs towards another and puts a body on him and then suddenly they contact violently its hard to get on the refs for making that call. Especially when they're probably starting to turn their heads to watch the play.

The offense is given the benefit of doubt in the NBA.

  • You say when......
Dunleavy has ONE BIG OLD HEAD....man, you could use that as a wrecking ball, maybe he could make extra $$$ in the off season, rent it out to Scientists to simulate the total eclipse of the moon...!
