I think the trade exception scenario is still likely. Remember, retirement means no buyout...the money on the contract just disappears.

So if you were running a team under the cap, wouldn't you take on sheed's deal plus a million dollars or so? Sheed would then retire, and you'd end up with the exact same cap space you had before the deal, plus free money or a second round pick. You'd literally be in the exact same situation as you were pre-shaq, just one more 2nd rounder or a couple million richer. hard to see why a team wouldn't do that.

Yes.  Assuming you wanted to essentially give away the player that you are trading to us.  It was one thing when we were talking about a sign and trade for Shaq or Josh Howard, but I think the disparity is when we're talking about guys like Shane Battier.

Houston may be looking to dump salary (but I'm not sold on that even), but I don't think they're looking to hand Battier to us for a 2nd round pick and cap relief.

I think we're likely only going to get overpaid player teams are pretty anxious to dump.

And that's why I don't think Posey is a stretch.  His talent doesn't justify his salary; however, on a team like ours in need of a big 3 and having no cap space, he could be worth it to us.

Yes, yes, yes.  He's not worth it, but he's worth it TO US.  Yes, he's dropped off, but still better than most other options (I'd prefer a flier on T-Mac for the minimum).

I don't think a trade for an exception would be welcomed by the league since he's already announced his retirement...a bit too much of a stretch there to not raise the "circumvent the cap" flag, but it might just let it go...
I don't think he is worth that much to us. The marginal production added isn't worth the marginal increase in payroll.

Depends.  Right now we're banking on 2/3 of Daniels, Wafer, and Bradley panning out.  Bradley is a bit of a long shot, Wafer isn't much better, and Daniels, while talented, has a terrible injury history.

At the very least, Posey provides more depth.  But likely he adds more defensive size, more shooting at the 3, and more intangibles.

And what could his contract really hurt?  At worst, he lessens Wyc's desire to spend next summer.  However, with the likelihood that we get worse in 2011-2012 and that Miami gets better, we should be putting all our eggs in this basket.

I'd still prefer other options.  However, I'm beginning to question if we have too high of hopes (Battier) or if other deals are going to cost too much (BBD being involved for Prince).

The team is built for 2 years. Look at the contracts. Posey is paid way too much for his ability at this point. He has 2 more years at that price. It may be better to go into the season with the extra roster spot than to have that much money tied up for this and next season.

Posey isn't a big body like O'Neal who can still have an impact in declining physical condition or a minimum contract (for half a season at that) like Finley. Posey is a big risk.
