Utah is an intriguing partner, but I'm not sure we'll be the best fit, because I think Utah will be trying to assemble a competitive team while looking to get under the luxury tax. So they're probably looking to trade to a team under the cap...or trade with Dallas for Dampier's non-guaranteed deal. Regardless, any deal we make will have to be large enough to result in the Celtics taking on several more million dollars than Utah does, to help Utah with the tax.
If Utah only keeps the players under contract for next season (so no fesenko, boozer, korver) and not counting their (high) draft pick, they're at 58 million. Tax is 68 million, so they've got less than 10 mil to play with, which is not enough to keep boozer. But, we could trade Baby, Pierce, and Perk to utah for Kirilenko, Boozer (starting at 17 million), and Koufos. This would save Utah about 7 million of Boozer's salary, putting them right near the tax threshold and allowing them to keep a SF,C, bench player.
Not a very attractive trade, really. But I think that's the kind of deal you need to make with Utah: They're trying to get something for Boozer (or be able to keep him) but without paying tax, so they're looking to dump money. Hard for us to help with that since we're over the cap, so we can only help by making the deal huge and taking back more money than we're giving out.
