Alex Gonzalez's X-rays on his right hand on Saturday morning came back negative and he should be cleared to play, his agent, Eric Goldschmidt, said.

Shortstop Jed Lowrie had surgery on his left wrist earlier in the year and still battles soreness with his wrist, while infielder Nick Green has a bulging disc in his back that pinches on a nerve, causing weakness in his leg.

Green hasn't played in more than two weeks, and almost assuredly will not be able to come back this week and make the postseason roster for the first series against the Angels. The only healthy infielder is Chris Woodward, who was designated twice by the Red Sox this season and who only started one game at shortstop this year.

If it came down to that guy being our starting shortstop, I think the Sox may have actually went with Youk at short. Hypothetically, do you think this is what they would've done?

Youk wouldnt play SS.  That remains one of the stupidest, unlikely suggestions from 'fans'.

Not only does it not make sense defensively (for multiple, obvious reasons...could you imagine his range, it would be atrocious), you wouldnt want to risk the injury to youk that would come from playing a new position.
