More to the point, I don't like the idea of sponsor logos replacing team logos.  A jersey with "Boston Celtics" to me looks a lot better than a green jersey saying "Dunkin' Donuts".

Yea, im sure i would adjust to it, but it would tick me off.

The thing is, other famous teams do this and i don't even really think of it. MAn U comes to mind. I don't associate the Red's with a particular advisement, I just know they put stuff on their jerseys. If i stop to really think about it i remember the "O" on the front of course.

I would hate it personally, it would probably stop me from ever buying another jersey, but i can't say i would take it as far as not watching.

Hopefully we'll never have to see it.

Didn't ManU have AIG for the longest time?  That was, I think, the wealthiest sports team, with AIG on the front.  I agree that's selling out, but come on.  Just look at our arenas that change names every other year because of contracts.  Look at Bank of America, I mean, TD Banknorth, I mean TD Garden or whatever it's called now.  What about the Staples Center?  America Airlines Arena.  I personally think corporate names on our arenas is more of a "sell out" move than on the jerseys.  At least you can overlook the logos on jersey, you can't overlook an arena name.

The difference is that Utd -- and most European soccer teams -- never had a large team logo on their uniform.  Utd's uniform *never* said "MANCHESTER UNITED" or "RED DEVILS" in large letters across the front.  (Link.)

American teams would be replacing "Boston Celtics" with "Dunkin' Donuts", much like the WNBA is doing this season.  To me, that is distasteful.

Replacing the team name with a logo is a complete speculation at this point.  If that was the case, I would be against it.  Actually, I am against it right now.  I would rather be the way it is right now.  However, what I am saying is that we have sold ourselves out a long time ago when we started naming our arenas to corporate business.  I would personally rather have logos on a team uniform and still be able to call the Boston Garden then TD Banknorth.

Well, it's what the WNBA did (or at least what at least two WNBA teams are doing this season), which is what Cuban was responding to.  To me, that's a bridge too far.

If that was the case, then I would agree with you.

Just wait until some player decides to tattoo an ad right on his arm.

This has been going on in soccer forever. It stinks but people adjust. It would be great if it kept ticket prices down, but it won't. Barcelona (the team that just want the European championship) took the high road and put unicef on their jerseys.

at what point do advertising dollars stop making sense? you have the building, the bill boards, the in game advertising. is there a point where a marketer says well, there's already so much going on, there's no way my ad will make a difference?

If it cuts down on the number of ad breaks then I'm all for it.

If it's just owners lining their pockets and doing nothing to improve the quality of the game, then I'd rather it didn't happen ... but I can't say I care too much about it either.

As an aside, apparently Reebok is upset because Gortat (who they sponsor) has a Michael Jordan tattoo.  They've asked him to cover it up, and thus far, he's refused.

Haha... I like Gortat better already. Sign him up!
