GLS: Most of you on this board recall McHale playing on a broken foot in the 87 playoffs, in an attempt to get banner 17 (and two in a row) and consequently, the damage that he did to his foot.....and what it took off his career, we will never know.

IndeedProceed: All I'm saying is that when the Celtics' playoff hopes are on the line, he won't be watching from the sidelines because Doc is limiting his mins to 18 mins

Time out fellows.

Here's a critical difference... who was McHale's backup in '87? Greg Kite! Hmm... that's a liability, not a backup.

Today, we have a rock solid frontcourt with BBD, Perks, MM, and Powe. That's a considerable upgrade over Kite. With the above in mind, isn't it conceivable that our bigs can keep the C's in the game so that KG wouldn't need to play more than 18 mins per contest, thus being able to contribute at near 100% for every minute on the court? You see, a well managed game can have the best of both worlds, limited minutes for an injured all star but sound overall team play.

Well, while I see your points. I disagree.

Our frontcourt is more serviceable in my mind than rock solid. When other teams up their level of play, we're gonna need Garnett for more than 18mins per game.

Absolutely. I think he'll play more than that. Cortisone shots have some truly undesirable secondary effects, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Garnett won't have a lot more chances of playing a major role in a serious title contender till the end of his career.

Dude, the Lakers are serviceable. Just because Gasol got mad, back in X-mas, doesn't make him a tour de force.

Radmanovic is laughable and sure, I'll give Bynum his kudos, however, their big man sub is Odom, a man who refuses to live to his potential.

So granted, if Odom decides to be all-that-he-can-be that the Lakers would crush our frontline but so far, I've only seen him play at his best, during some key brain spasms, not in a consistent manner. And BTW, I do believe he's an extraordinary talent but he's got no heart.

Was he not traded?

Odom will be able to run wild without KG.

Perk can only cover one of the Lakers big men.  Gasol will have no problem shooting over every Celtic big man except Perk and KG.

Right now, the Celtics front court is a mess.  There are only two healthy players that should see time on the court in the playoffs.  The other three are still injured.  When you throw in the Kobe/Lebron superstar foul calls, KG becomes even more important.

The Lakers frontcourt is much better than serviceable.

Bynum/Gasol is one of the top 5 duos in the league if Bynum is healthy.

Gasol is a 2 time allstar, former rookie of the year. Bynum's per this season in limited minutes is almost 20. Perkins? He's sittin pretty at 13.

Lamar Odom is a better bench player than any bench player on our roster. I mean he is one talented guy.

ANd why are we even talkin about this? Look at the Cleveland game. We got out boarded 46 to 28!

Just to be competitive with Cleveland in the playoffs we're gonna need 30 mins outta Garnett. And thats assuming we even get to Cleveland. We're 2 and 2 against the Magic this season, but the 2 wins came prior to christmas, and the two losses have come in the last month (give or take a week). So to say Garnett's minutes are gonna be limited at all in the second round or conference finals to me is ridiculous. They're playing to win this season, not make sure KG is well rested for the beach in Maui.

my opinion is that if Kevin doesn't play for the entire first round, it's not a problem.... not that i expect that.  i could see his minutes being limited and it's fine.  we're playing philly (most likely), and we should be able to easily beat them with out KG.  But I think as we need him, he'll be there playing 30+ minutes a game.  We'll just rest him whenever we can though to get him back to 100% as soon as possible.... for the second round it would be good to have him at that point.... though there's no guarantee that we'll see the magic then because of their injuries and they way they're playing right now... the bulls could knock them off.

I concur, Odom is an extraordinarily talented player but he doesn't show up half the time. That's why he's the one X-factor, when on fire, can completely eat up our frontline, with Gasol/Bynum. And in that sense, we don't have an answer there but at his normal excretion, our big men can keep up with the Lakers.

Ok, that's my final medical diagnosis for the playoffs.

We had the best original starting five before the injury. The key is to keep our B-team scoring, so that by the middle of Q4, the score disparity is within 2-3 possessions and the original starting five (w/ KG) can win it all from there. In other words, don't risk more than the max allotted time on a per game basis. The risk here is that any additional inflammation needs to be able to heal within a 48 hour span.

How do you know this? Why so pessimistic?? ???

He doesn't.
Glad you guys asked this and answered it before I could.  I wouldn't be so nice.

All of this pessimism is baseless.

We managed to get the #2 without him and I'd hold off too if I wanted to see if just a few more days of therapy could possibly get him to near 100%.

Sounds to me from all of the quotes I've read today that Doc and Danny have weighed the decision with what the trainers are saying gives him the most juice by Saturday and made the call based on that.

KG will be like an animal uncaged come Saturday.  Law help everyone within ear shot when he steps on the court.

Ok, due to Doc River's recent announcement, I'm bumping my thread up.

KG can still play for 18 mins. I know that Doc doesn't want the Kevin McHale story to happen to KG, but to be frank, he'll be fine during the offseason, after a small arthroscopic procedure to remove the calcium deposits. It's not fractured... McHale's foot was broken in '87.

Now, given the way the schedule looks, KG can take the first two series off, playing a few garbage minutes, here and there, to keep himself, in mental game shape for the Cavs series.

We that believeth in Garnett, though Doc said he may be done for the playoffs, know yet shall he play: And whosoever liveth and believeth in Garnett shall never lack for intensity and fundamentally sound defense.

That is all. Its like tinkerbell. If we all believe, he will get better.
