Nick it isn't about his overall production. It is more how there are games, particularly against teams with lots of length to hinder his drives, that by playing completely off him at times that he has been taken out of the game.
It happens less often now, but in the playoffs when you have a lot of games to game plan and adjust it is a signifigant weakness. One that effects the entire team because Rondo's man is providing a quick double much of the time. It is not about his low scoring.
He's a top 5 point guard even with a glaring weakness. As he addresses it he'll be an MVP type PG. I love that he has been taking the jumper more often off the dribble. Even if it drives his FG% down it will help the team overall. I worry that he'll stop taking it when KG is back.
I think that thinking is over thought out and overblown. LA did that to him in all six games last June and yet he still had two extremely productive games and averaged 10 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals for the series in just 27 minutes. And now Rondo is a much better and smarter player than he was at that time last year. He cohesion with the starters is that much better. If Cleveland and LA want to pack it in and force him to shoot it in a seven game series, that too can be gameplanned against to nullify it's effects.
I think people are going to see a much different Rondo this playoff season as compared to last season and I just don't see where that game plan is going to be nearly as effective as everyone thinks it will.
Rondo is not the Rondo of June 2008. This is a much smarter, savy, more physical and more mature player and he and Doc will take advantage of the switch and lag defense that the Clevelands and LAs of the world will attempt to employ.
I'm sure of it.
