Toronto just wanted to clear their JNeal off their list of mistakes. Their next move would be to trade Bosh for a group of players in return. I just wish we could have thrown a player in there to get Moon somehow
Can't stop, Rondo!

Ah I don't where to write, the fanshot or the forum, I'll copy and paste:

Colangelo’s loyal to his players ain’t he? Bringing back Marion, and Banks, and Voshkul. Strange days.

It’s a terrible trade for Toronto. Marcus Banks kills them in 2010 and could easily ensure mediocrity for the next 6-7 years. It’s time for Toronto to start considering drastic moves, quite simply because anything less than that will result in failures unless they’re obscenely lucky. The first round pick hurts too, but Banks is the deal breaker.

It’s a brilliant trade for Miami because they got rid of Marcus Banks which vastly improves their options for 2010 free agency. Also because they pick up a solid role player in Jamario Moon, and they pick up a future first round pick from the Raps. That’s all good.

The Jermaine-Marion part, well, having another year on the contract helps because it means Wade has some help until the Heat find real reinforcement … but it’ll be a downgrade for the team short term. Marion is the better player even with that lousy offensive contributions he’s been mustering up for the last few months.

Toronto gets a nice short term bump with Marion on the squad for the next two months, but the long term cost is something awful.

any idea how Miami gets a $4 million exception here? I thought that only worked when one team was under the cap in a trade

Here are the salaries:

Marion:  $17,810,000
Banks:   $4,260,000

for

O'Neal: $21,372,000
Moon: $711,517

Looking at those numbers, the salaries are pretty even; I'm actually not sure how a $4 million exception was created.  Usually, to create a trade exception, the team sending out more salary gets the exception, and I'm not sure how Miami could come out with a $4 million exception to its credit here.

Maybe Toronto had a pre-existing trade exception?  In that case, if Miami traded Banks to Toronto in a separate transaction, a $4.260 exception would have been created to Miami's benefit.  The Marion for O'Neal and Moon deal could then be completed separately.  If Miami did end up with a exception, that's the only way I can see it happening.
