hasn't JO sorta looked good this month?

yes, which is why miami was willing to do the trade, and I believe JO will come up big on that team. He didn't fit into toronto's system, they were better without him on the floor. He will fit very well in miami though, good trade for both teams

This is about 2010 for Miami, plain & simple.
Sure, 2010 was likely a big factor here. But don't sleep on Moon. He's a nice addition - no superstar obviously, but I think of him as a poor man's Posey (maybe without the clutch 3s). He contributes in lots of ways on the court. Again, very nice addition for Miami.

I thought this too, although Moon's also on an expiring deal. I think it improves Miami's chances at a playoff run (they may well reach the 2nd round now).

What's Miami's starting 5? Is Beasley their PF, or SF? Does JO play C, or PF?

Moon could be a pleasant surprise for them although I'm not so certain of that.  If nothing else, he's cheap and his contract is short-term.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that James Jones is the biggest contract currently left on the books in 2010 at a rather paltry $4,010,000.

Heat are going to have a ton of cap space to play with.

Absolutely what I was thinking.  Miami wants to resign Wade and will now have 20M more come off the books in JO (plus 8 more in Blount) to make another big signing or 2.  Huge move, plus they get Moon.

My question is:  Why does Toronto want 2 PFs on their team both making over 14 mil?  They REALLY wanted to shed that extra year off JO huh?  So badly that they gave up an asset in Moon?  There aren't even that many good FA's this offseason that Marion's expiring contract will allow them to sign.  The only reasoning I can come up with is that they are desperate to improve the team this offseason to try to keep Bosh from leaving in 2010.

I have no clue who starts.  But they have a nice frontcourt rotation of Moon, Beasley, Haslem, and JO.  All of which except Moon can play 2 positions.  I like that.

They have Skippy and Magloire at C, too. Lots of flexibility and depth for them.

Toronto saves alot of money and gets rid of a white elephant.  The rest is secondary.

As for Bosh, it's an interesting question.  I think Bosh is overrated and will not command a maximum offer as a free agent. So Toronto may be able to keep him if the Raptors are willing to overpay.

Also, nice move by Riley dumping Banks' contract.

IMHO, Toronto paid too high of a price by eating Banks contract. Moon is just another bench player, no way he should be starting for a good team (or even for a not-so-good one).

I'm curious to see if the Raptors will try to keep Marion. They probably should try to, he could be a good fit next to Bosh+Bargnani+Calderon, if that's the way they're going.

It's funny that seeing the big picture, Colangelo gave up salary flexibility (Rasho + Baston + Moon)+ TJ ford (contract till 2011) + 16th pick in a good draft for salary flexibility (Marion) + Banks (contract till 2011): terrible, terrible deal.

Only problem i see w/this deal is JO maybe not staying healthy long enough to make an impact. If he can stay healthy throughout the playoffs, they will be a handful.

I think that any solid production that Miami gets out of O'Neal is simply an added bonus.  I really think this is about his contract, first and foremost.

I don't think either team really "wins" in this trade.

Sure, Miami basically gets $4M more in cap space in 2010, but that is about it.

Most interesting is that Marion is once again reunited with Bryan Colangelo.  It has been no secret that Colangelo wants to recreate the Phoenix formula in Toronto and now he has two of his former pet projects (Marion and Banks).  I bet TOR does everything in its power to keep Marion after this season is over.  He could be a nice pairing with Bosh.
Celtics fan for life.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Calderon is no steve nash but he will make Marion better than Wade or CHalmers (or anyone else) could make him.

Oh, they'll need to get some production out of him. If the rationale behind this trade was just to clear Banks $4 million in 2010/2011 from the books, then giving up Marion expiring and eating JO's salary next season was an incredible expensive price to pay.
