Could he get through to Jaylen that it’s ok being the league’s best number two relative to (hopefully in 2-3 years) the league’s best number one?
Another dark horse idea: Tim Duncan.
It’s hard to see anybody tuning out Pippen or Duncan…and they always seemed like a Celtic kind of guy without being a Celtic.
Since neither one has real coaching experience, just like Nash before this season, either one would be the perfect fit for CBS’ coaching staff. And if either one taps out, Stevens is back in a la Riley.
You can't have a new President and coach with no experience
that is asking for it
It worked for the Bulls with Jackson/Krause in the late 80s-late 90s?
I have no idea what one has to do with the other.....not as if the positions are complimentary or mutually dependent.
I believe basketball teams have 4 areas of leadership:
(1) Owner - CEO - visionary planner
(2) GM - long term manager / planner - how to take the owner's vision and turn it into a reality.
(3) Coach - short term manager - how to use tools he currently has at his disposal (players)
(4) Players - the workers
Having two key leadership positions filled by first time managers (in those respective positions) is a high risk proposition. You got two guys learning their job on the job at the same time.
Usually it works best to have one experienced with one inexperienced when hiring a first time manager in one of the two slots. This is because the experienced one can step in calm things down when rocky moments happen. When you have two inexperienced guys together, these moments are more likely to go unaddressed and problems tend to become larger than they should be.
Now maybe Ainge staying somewhat close to the team even if not in a full time job could be enough to cover that need. Someone to step in and help Stevens if needed. Offer advice / direction. Provide a sounding board for Stevens as he learns his new job.
But yeah usually a first time GM = experienced head coach or first time head coach = experienced GM. It just tends to work better. There is cover for the inexperienced one. Keep the train on the tracks. Keep things ticking over properly.
