An alternative is for someone to start tracking stats in games won (“won stats”) and games lost ( “lost stats”) in addition to total stats.
Heck, create an award of offensive player of the year which goes to whoever has the best “win stats” in terms of points, assists, hockey assists and offensive rebounds (like hockey treats goals compared to assists in tabulating “points,” weight our points twice as heavily as assists and hockey assists, and give offensive rebounds the same weighting as assists). Love the idea of treating our assists for “win stats” the same way that hockey does. Call them “secondary assist” and “primary assist.”
If they want to encourage more team playing and less ball-hogging, granting prestige to whoever has the best stats and wins is a no-brainer. As-is introducing the concept of primary and secondary assists. In fact, if the above award existed then I bet the winner would almost always be the MVP too.
