....looks pretty good right now for Ainge from a cap management perspective comparied to Brown's peers. Transactionally (i.e. outside the draft), he remains an elite GM.

Ainge is batting 1000 with signing or not re-signing his guys imo. All of his extensions have been good bargains

The one thing holding Brown back is his (lack of) basketball IQ. He is an elite athlete, but he doesn't possess natural basketball instincts.

I agree. He's a very intelligent person but lacks bball instincts. He's made significant improvement on that though and I think he will continue to do so. Part of the problem I believe is that he overthinks everything too much.

Brandon Ingram, who was picked ahead of Brown, just signed a 5 year max extension for $158M. There is no way that I would take Ingram over Brown now.

I think we may agree, but I don't think I'd call it basketball IQ. I think he's an extremely intelligent player. I also think that any success he has on the court is the direct result of his work ethic.

On offense, I don't think he quite has the "feel" of scoring in a reliable way within the rhythm of the offense. He scores--in bunches sometimes. But it seems like his points don't come as easily. I also think that, while he is a good passer, his feel for passing with CBS system has not been great.

On defense, I think he's really smart, but I think he takes plays off. He has the potential to be an all-NBA defender, but he doesn't always seem locked-in. You see the potential when he goes against tough matchups or the best players in the NBA. I just wish I could see it more.

With his work ethic and the new opportunities within the Celtic offense, I would guess he'll take a step forward. He might have a slow start to the season and be a bit inefficient and turnover-prone (ala Tatum last year), but I think by the end of the season he will be improving.

No way you'd take Ingram?  He was an all star last year.

I personally would prefer Jaylen too.  I think they are somewhat close as overall players and its mostly up to preference and also team fit.  I like Jaylen better for this team, plus I just like his style more overall.  But there are certain roster constructions that I could prefer Ingram on (like maybe the Kings).
2020 CelticsStrong All-2000s Draft -- Utah Jazz

Finals Starters:  Jason Kidd - Reggie Miller - PJ Tucker - Al Horford - Shaq
Bench:  Rajon Rondo - Trae Young - Marcus Smart - Jaylen Brown -  Peja Stojakovic - Jamal Mashburn - Carlos Boozer - Tristan Thompson - Mehmet Okur

I thought Ingram was great in college, but his game didn't translate as well into the pros. Don't get me wrong, he is still good, but I just like Jaylen better. I just don't think you can underestimate Jaylen's defensive ability, even at multiple positions, which I don't think Ingram possesses.

Ingram was a stud this year.  Not sure what people are complaining about.  24ppg, 6bds, 5 assists. 1 stl 46%for, 39%3pt and 80%ft.  Dude was a stud.

It took him awhile to develop and was a disappointment his first couple of years.  I think that’s what people remember.  He really broke out this past year though.  He’s a better player than Brown.  Although, Brown has a better contract (from the team’s perspective) and might be a better compliment to Tatum.

Thanks for starting this thread.

Probably Ainge's best trademark, making bargain extension deals and letting role players walk if he has to overpay to keep them. Saving $4M a year might not look as a big deal, but it is.

Look what it did to Hayward's situation when Charlotte offered him around $16M ($4M a year) more  ;D.

I do believe Jaylen's basketball IQ issue is on the offensive end, yet he still put up 20 ppg, 6 rbs, and 2 assists pg. [dang] close to your stud, but Jaylen is a far superior defender. Branden's slight edge offensively, doesn't come close to the edge Brown has defensively, which is why I would easily take Brown. This isn't a green colored glasses thing either, as I would have traded Brown to improve the team.

You may salivate at the 'horrible' contracts  the Cs get from their players but you must also wonder if at some point it affects player morale. I have heard that players trash talk contract amounts to each other during games.
