I don't think Christian Wood can be a starting 5 defensively.

All defensive metrics indicate that he can. He ain't strong enough to defend traditional Centers, but he's a very switchable defender and an excellent rim protector. I reckon he'd be a terrific fit in our system.

Here are his on/off stats when playing with Drummond.

Detroit was +3.2 with Wood and Drummond sharing the floor.
They were +4.1 with just Wood.
They were -5.6 with just Drummond.

I also think he'll cost too much money to be a realistic target.

If we create a $34,379,100 TPE by trading Kemba to the Knicks, we can definitely afford Wood.

Huh? What defensive metrics? His DRTG isn't too flash, his DBPM has been a negative his whole career (career best mark in 2019-20 though), and he is one of the worse Detroit Pistons players who have played significant minutes when it comes to opponent FG% close to the rim.
The stats you cite have more to do with his offensive firepower against opponent bench units than it does his defence. His rim protection is also really average, with a block% of 3.4 (4th best on the Pistons). His good defensive rebounding offsets it to a degree, but at no stage in his NBA career has he been a good defender.

He's basically Obi Toppin, but slightly better on defence and less dynamic offensively
