Lowe had Kevin Arnovitz on this week to talk about their All Defense teams. The guy they both had one their 1st team was Smart. Love the Smart love. They were emphatic that Giannis is the DPOY so it sounds like Smart is out of that race but his chances to repeat on the 1st Team seems excellent.

Brown and Tatum got mentions. Lowe says Tatum was really close to making his 2nd team.

I actually thought Smart took a step backwards with his defense this year. I am not convinced his defense was much better overall than Tatum or Brown. But given both Tatum and Brown played outstanding defense this year, that's not really any slight to Smart on his overall defense this year. Just not as good as last year.

How is Giannis Defensive Player of the Year? He had a great season overall, but DPOY? There are many other guys ahead of him.

I feel as if it’s due to his impact on Milwaukee’s team defence. They have a lot of solid defenders (Lopez, Bledsoe, Middleton etc.) but there is definitely a school of thought that has Giannis has the reason behind their suffocating defence.

I do agree that there are other guys who are better defenders than him, but the league is in a complete Giannis love-fest mode

I agree with Gouki. He's what makes Milwaukee's defence so good (lineup data and the eye test support that - the Brook Lopez role can be approximated by other bigs as long as they're flanked by Giannis), but he's likely not the best defender in the league even though he has a great case for top 3/5.
