The amount of ignorance I'm seeing in some of the replies is incredibly disheartening, but not surprising.
In reply to https://twitter.com/KennyUnfazed/status/1219426408004493312 I've seen comments like:
How is this the NBA's responsibility?
**NBA allows player to make millions.
**Player wastes millions.
**Blame NBA. Typical.
That boy is on crack it has nothing to do with mental health.
That’s like saying there is no such thing as a murderer who’s not mentally ill. it’s all about how you resort to it. Don’t use mental illness as an excuse or handicap for drug addiction. It’s like a obese person eating a pie of pizza and blaming genetics.
Ugh
I tend to agree with some of the quotes and or points, most likely delonte‘s problem is more about drugs than mental illness.
Drug addiction is a mental illness. You can’t treat them independently, especially in a case like Delonte’s where the mental health problems are already known about.
No it is not, it might be related, but there is a difference. Anyone can become a drug addict in a certain situation and enviroment, and simply by staying off of it can cure himself. Mental illness is a whole different animal
Dude you have no clue. Addiction is a mental health issue, it’s not the drug. If your dealing with mental health issues, drugs is a crutch to help not feel the pain anymore. Addicts when they get off have to replace it with something else. My uncle replaced it with scratch off tickets and fishing. Not all mental illness turns to drugs, there usually something in its place that a person does to help ease the pain. Gamble, sex, buying things, drugs is same things as those, they can all hurt you life in one way or an other.
It is just my opinion, nowadays everthing is tagged as an illness or disease, and to me that is just making excuses for bad decision making and\or parenting.
Video games are now made to be an addictive activity. Are we saying that all of those kids are mentally ill and need to be medicaly treated, or can we agree that parents should encourage their kids to socialize and enroll into some type of phisical activity or atleast monitor their gaming hours.
I'll add something similar on your side of the debate. Do we think that 75% of the grunge era musicians musicians especially around Seattle had mental illness? 75% of them were addicted to something. Some of those drugs they used were just part of the scene and made them physically dependent. That said, Delonte definitely has mental illness.
Addiction is akin to Type 2 diabetes. Abstinence will prevent it, but people aren’t perfect. Due to behavioral choices, genetics, etc. some people will become afflicted, and it can become a very serious, debilitating illness.
I can’t imagine telling a diabetic “it’s a choice” and having that be the end of the discussion.
