That's not great. It's about what you would expect from a less than $10 million 6th man. He obviously, even in his less than 100% form, can still give you decent production.
The problem is so many get into his expectations based on his salary and that they expected Utah Hayward way too soon.
Hayward got hurt in October then had the surgery then spent 2+ months in a cast and come January 2018 started his rehab. He progressed well until May 2018 when the pain in his leg got too much so he went into another surgery. He then spent all June and most of July on crutches and set him back big-time. So he did what he could from late July to October. His total recuperation was set back maybe 4-6 months because of his second surgery. That fans don't know this, don't care about this or thinks it doesn't matter, then learn about it or take this into consideration about where he is right now physically.
Also, playing up to his total contract disappeared in October 2017.There is nothing anyone can do. He will never live up to the $120 million he will make on this contract. It's a sunk cost. You just do the best you can to get the most you can from him from this point forward.
At this point, you play Hayward in the NBA, against NBA competition and you try to manage his minutes to best suit the outcome of games. If he isn't playing great and hurting the team, play him less. If he is playing well, play him more.
Then just hope all that playing time gets him to get back 100% physically and more importantly, 100% mentally.
Know how shooters get out of slumps? Keep shooting.
Know how to get back to 100% while playing against NBA competition? Keep playing against NBA competition!
