After 30 games I think we know who the Celtics are especially with a home loss to the lowly Suns....

Last year the Celtics were 1 game away from the NBA finals.

This year does anyone really expect the Celtics to improve on last year and make the NBA finals?

This team is not functioning like a playoff team that can make a long run.  IMO, there is no way this team improves to the point that it surpasses what the Celtics did last year.

Team management, the players and the fans should not be satisfied with the Celtics just making the playoffs like the 4th seed and going out after the 1st or 2nd round but that is what is going to happen.

I know, tell me that there are 52 games left and believe if you want to that the Celtics are going to get it together and beat Toronto (or Philly or Milwaukee) in the playoffs.

Baynes out with broken arm, not good so the short term situation doesn't look bright either.

All I say say is...I agree.  Dark days for C's fans.  I can't even suggest how to fix it.

The Celts just played dominant ball for eight games in a row.  As in, dominance that the league hasn't seen in 25 years.

Now that they've lost the second game on a back-to-back and another game where were were missing two starters and a key reserve, it's gloom and doom?

Teams need big men to win.  Take away the starting center, power forward, and backup center from most teams, and they will struggle.  Yes, there have been some season long struggles -- Hayward, Brown, and Rozier are playing worse than they've shown in the past -- but we know the talent is there for them to improve, in some cases drastically.

They've looked no better (and no worse) than a top 3-4 team in the East, so far.

They may improve on that over the rest of the season.  Their point differential is pretty good.

For whatever reason, this season's team does have something in their DNA that causes them to lose focus or motivation for whole quarters, sometimes entire games.

I think it's reasonable to expect them to enter the playoffs with HCA in the first round, but likely needing to win games on the road after round one.

That would place them in the position of being an underdog in Round 2 / 3 against Milwaukee, Toronto, or perhaps Philly.

After last season, that's disappointing.  However, they could still go on a run if their lead guys get hot and Brad has some tricks up his sleeve.

No doubt, though, if this season ends in a second round exit while we watch some other team be the first Eastern Conference representative in the Finals without LeBron since 2010, that will hurt.

Let's cool it for a second though, and stop always worrying about the playoffs and the end result.  I say this to myself, too.  I'm always extrapolating the latest loss to the end result and how disappointed I will be at that result.

Could we enjoy the present?  I'd like to enjoy the present.  We have 50+ games of Celtics basketball to watch and hopefully enjoy.

It would help if the team figured out how to have some consistency and play with more energy on a regular basis.  I'd love if we could get some health, too.

I'm wondering whether Ainge pulls the trigger on some sort of deal. A month or more without Baynes creates a hole.  Also I wonder what the confidence level in Jaylen turning things around is right now?

This team is in need of some more physicality which you'd think he could easily provide but he's been terrible - at both ends of the court.

What are the pieces for a trade, though?

Unless you want to trade Smart or Morris, there aren't a lot of significant contracts (to match salary) outside of the core of the roster.

Who knows? Maybe the Celtics are suffering from 3P disease: too many non-shooters shooting 3s. Houston may be going through the same malaise right now. It's especially galling to see them take open 3s as the first option down the court without passing into the paint. Greg Anthony says the best 3P shooting is on passes from the paint. At least somebody is close to the basket on a miss for the offensive rebound.

Stevens doesn't seem to take to rim protectors, preferring instead bigs who can exist on the perimeter setting picks. The result is their rebounding sucks. They have so few bigs that the absence of Horford and now Baynes (Morris was also absent against Phoenix)is a killer.

What about the Lob guy? I'm not sure he fits into Stevens' view of the Universe. Ayton killed them last night, Williams played 24 minutes (huge for him), but didn't seem to make that much difference--even though his numbers weren't bad. It's just that Ayton was made to look like Embiid. Williams needs to play within 10 ft of the basket to be effective, and Irving needs to feed him lobs--as he suggested today.

What's the prognosis on Williams? Satisfied with his 24 minutes against Phoenix? The kid should be getting big minutes in the next few games, and he needs to be used in a way that uses his best skills--above the basket.

They have picks and Brown has value.  Smart and Morris are probably 2 guys you don't deal because they along with Baynes are the physicality that the team does have.  The thing is, Baynes is a major loss.  And that's going to cause some losses.  I'd love to know what Brad and Danny really think of Jaylen right now.  He was essentially benched in the 4Q last night.

Oh boo hoo.

Horford will be back as will Morris as will Baynes

Williams was thrown into the deep end of the pool and swam well.

We will be fine.

Trading Jaylen now would be selling low.  Ainge has never been a guy to sell low on a valued trade asset.

Generally speaking I don't think smart teams trade top 5 picks on rookie deals for short term help.

Quoted because it deserves repeating.

A lot is being made of the Phoenix loss. We were without our top 3 bigs and got crushed on the glass. If we have Baynes or Horford available, Ayton doesn't go off for 18 boards.

This is something I've believed for as long as I've been familiar with the game of basketball, yet I keep seeing and hearing so much about "small ball." And the Celtics are small the majority of the time, in the sense that Baynes doesn't usually play big minutes, with Al getting the majority of the minutes at the 5 and then Tatum or Morris at the 4.

And it's kinda funny that so many people have been bemoaning the loss of Baynes, whereas prior to his injury a lot of people on this site questioned his usefulness.
