“We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented, unchecked, and circumventing the line of people who are waiting patiently, diligently, and lawfully to become immigrants in this country.”

Do you agree with this statement?

I agree with the statement.  But I am also aware that you are juxtaposing this statement with a thread title about the "caravan".

So, if you were to ask me whether I have compassion and understanding for why desperate people might attempt to seek a better life, or asylum, in the US -- I would say that I do.   I care about people within our borders, but also for people -- especially children -- outside our borders.  It isn't our obligation to allow entry to everyone who wants entry and without order and fairness, but our values should also dictate that we respectfully vet those who meet asylum criteria and to calm and humanize our rhetoric with regard to those who don't (as we turn them away).  We shouldn't let people "jump the line", but we can speak about these people in human terms -- not as criminals or manipulators -- but as human beings who seek a safer and healthier life for themselves and, in many cases, for their children.   We have rules and laws -- we should follow them and keep our borders protected, orderly and fair.  Our leader need not vilify these people, build/validate our fear of them, and slam our door in their faces.  We may not be able to help them, but just as you would were a hungry child to knock on your door -- you may not give them residence, but you might give them a meal, some kindness, and some encourgement.  Big deal perhaps to caravaners who've traveled thousands of miles for refuge only to be turned away -- but who WE are matters.

Sorry if this sounds un-tough.  But I AM un-tough and not ashamed of it... and, to this point, also have been a proud American.

Absolutely agree with this. But why lie about the people in this caravan and their intentions? Why decry them all as criminals and say Middle Easterners are in the caravan? Why make it out like this caravan is going to be here any day when it's 1000 miles away and moving very slowly?

These are people running from crime, poverty and starvation and want a better life for them and their children. This is not the first time people fled their countries looking for a better life in America. Heck, America was founded exactly because of this.

I am not for completely open borders. The borders need to be defended. But this is also a human issue and we should maybe be look at it under a different light than just, people who try to get into the country from Central and South America are murders, rapists, gang members, and Middle Eastern terrorists coming here to ruin, live off and destroy our country when the opposite is exponentially the truth. They come here and want to work hard, become American citizens, contribute to our society and live the same American dream that Irish, Italian, German, English, Chinese, Mexican, etc. immigrants did before them did and were welcomed in.

Do you agree with this statement?

Sure. I actually think almost everyone agrees with this statement.

The problem is that we have a President who tries to make everybody terrified so he can have a political issue instead of trying to solve problems.

.@DHSgov can confirm that there are individuals within the caravan who are gang members or have significant criminal histories.

Saying those people are in Mexico and trying to get in US and saying they are in that caravan are two different things. Even Trump admitted there is no proof of Middle Easterns in the caravan.

And yes, it's naive to think there are not people in that caravan who are criminals. But labeling all of them as criminals is just fearmonguering. My guess is the huge minority if not any of those people are criminals and if we already know beforehand which are criminals and have already confirmed such from the Department of Homeland Security, then it should be pretty easy to take them into custody at the border and arrest them.

so is this an effort to now contradict Trump who's now admitted his statements along those lines had no factual support?  (like most of his statements but this time he actually admitted to having no facts to back up his claims)

OMG the brown people are coming!!!!! (sarcasm)

Enforce the laws, stop the race-baiting fearmongering.

Not complicated.

It is complicated, though.  Once those asylum seekers reach US soil, we get to either 1. Let them in, or 2. see stories about kids in cages.

It is complicated but the solution is not at either end of the political spectrum but somewhere in the middle which unfortunately, isn't going to happen any time soon.

This is a remarkably nothing statement even by political standards. It says nothing about the caravan and is so vague it could mean things like "a tour group got on a northbound bus to visit Tijuana".

But it is very much designed to make people connect those dots, and cover for a President who is, pardon my French, a bit of a fibber. So congrats to DHS for using public resources to spread propaganda trying to gin up some good old fashioned racial panic just before an election.

I'm good with tightening up the borders. You can't allow everyone in. And it's not our fault that some of the central American countries are hell holes - or at least have cities that are hell holes.

At the same time we have virtually no unemployment right now and when there aren't enough citizens to fill jobs, you look to immigrants.

So while Trumps talk about stopping the flow - in particular this caravan -- doesn't bother me. What does bother me is he doesn't take the next step - implement an actual program to fix immigration.  He never talks about that.
