This trade war is going to be costly and it hasn't even started:

Itíll pay off in the long run when we stop being dependent on other countries for things  and bring back entire industries of jobs here in America

That's like making a claim on your insurance policy for a car accident (which was your fault) instead of avoiding the accident to begin with.

In any case $12B won't be enough.

What a train wreck.

I like the Chinese tariffs. I do not like the Canadian and EU ones.

We don't have the labor force to bring back those jobs b/c Americans want to get paid more...and they NEED to get paid more because the tariffs are going to make prices rise here on foreign made goods.

I really don't get this idea that becoming isolationist again will somehow help the economy.

If you take out the racism, it seems very confusing....

I wonder if Republicans will ever return to their fiscally responsible roots.

It's amazing to me how Republicans continue to get fiscal conservatives to vote for them, when neither party is fiscally conservative anymore.

As a beaten down democrat, I might even consider voting Republican if that candidate ran on state's rights and fiscal responsibility. Neither party really gives me what I want, I just find the Democrats policies less abhorrent.

IMO this comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of treating trade as a zero-sum game. The US isolating itself makes about as much economic sense as Wyoming going it alone vs the other 49 states. Until/ unless you suddenly have the ability to do everything domestically as well as the rest of the world combined, despite regional differences, isolationism is economic idiocy.

There is no model in which we "bring back" manufacturing and it benefits the country as a whole. None.

We need to invest in production in areas we can compete on a global market. Some of these include energy, medicine, agriculture, technology fields. But we need more. I don't have the answers, but we need to produce more and we can't compete with other countries in the production of many common goods. We need to find and invest in new areas instead of only spending.
