I mean, this would be incredible. Not only would we have one of the best PGs in the game locked up long-term at an incredible value, but his discounted price would allow the Cs to spend quite a bit extra on a mid-level piece - maybe even keeping Smart AND Rozier.

But it is not even remotely likely - and, really, who could blame him?  Extensions really don't favor star players - especially if they are on pre-cap jump max contracts.

Everyone has their own risk tolerance- For me, with the injury history, I would lock the 107m in-A ton of money and the risk of something else happening would be too great of risk for me.

But as Roy said, unlikely scenario for us.

Yeah. And if Kyrie’s agent walks in asking for that deal, Ainge picks up the phone and calls the medical staff as soon as the meeting is over. If Kyrie has any faith in his health he doesn’t even offer.

We will see what happens.  I don't trust Irving 100 percent that he plans to stay here long term...until he signs the paper

IF he scoffs at the 107 million extension (which is likely expected)....and isn't actively pursuing for a better extension during the season.  Then Danny will have two options

1) ride him next season for the focus to win a championship. Then figure it out
2) trade him at the deadline (depending on the return). 

Not winning it all next season (or at very least making the finals) and losing Irving for nothing would be devastating for the long term

There is no better extension.  Irving will opt out after next season and become a free agent so he can get 30% Max.  Trading Irving at the deadline is not viable because the return for 1/2 year rentals is minimal.

No but I still think Kyrie is an interesting candidate for the Durant-style discount going forward. Maybe he likes playing in Boston for the Celtics and has enough money off the court and is just weird enough of a guy to not care quite so much.

Wouldn't that be nice?

It would be nice but unfortunately Kyrie's got the very valid counter that he already took a discount of sorts by waiving his 15% trade kicker to come here.

I'm sure the C's will offer it just to see but I cannot see him taking that deal. Not unless the knee injury is not what has been reported.
