"I think he's getting a little too much praise, but I like what he's doing," said Parish, a three-time NBA champion as the Celtics center in the '80s. "They're giving him all the love like he's won three or four championships. Come on now, win something first."

I always dismissed these kinds of arguments.
I would ask him back:
How many championships Pop won before he won?
How many did MJ win before his 1st ring?
Bill Russell? You?
If you haven't won yet it doesn't mean that you won't.
What matters is; are you good, are you consistent, are you a communicator.

Hasn't Parish been a bit sour on the Cs for a bit now because he hasn't had a coaching position he's desired?
Yep.  I seem to remember he pretty much asked bird for a coaching job publicly
Brad Stevens never coached under Pop (or Red) but it seems to me like he has made a team system like the spurs or c's of old.

Chief may be a little jealous to watch Baynes become an elite 3 point shooter.  :)

Obviously Lue is a much better coach than Stevens because he rode the Lebron train for half of a season and won a championship.  ::)

I agree that to be the 'best' you do need to eventually win a championship, but it's not like Brad has even come close to having a roster good enough to do so.

I think Parish is being very unfair:
Quote

So you shouldn't be getting any praise if you haven't won a championship? Nonsense. Further, which coach is actually capable of winning a championship with this current team (with Kyrie and Hayward injured ofc)?

Yeh, I think I'd prefer the hands Fitch or KC Jones were dealt to these ever changing ones Stevens has had to work with.  Two conference finals so far is pretty darn good.

I loved watching Chief as a player, but besides getting blackballed from coaching he has received somewhat of a hush hush free pass for his transgressions.  I guess they happened in the right decade.

Go away Chief.
Yup

You know who agrees with Parish's take on Brad Stevens? Brad Stevens.

Gotta disagree with Chief here. Very strongly.

Brad doesn't get enough praise

looking back...many great teams were great moslty remembered for their players .    Rivers is a prime example of a avg at best court coach ,  many more like him...won with unbeatable talent

I can see older players being jealous or taking up for their coaches, who were thought of as great coaches.....now CBS makes them look yawn ......so so averagec

what might a CBS lead Bird , Parrish , Walton team played like?.

I think he is protecting his history.

So...according to Parish you have to win a few championships to be considered great...I guess the following aren't 'great':

Players:
John Stockton
Karl Malone
Charles Barkely
George Gervin
Pete Maravich
Artis Gilmore
Patrick Ewing
Reggie Miller

Coaches:
Don Nelson
Jerry Sloan

Brad Stevens is being judged by a higher standard than other coaches. That should tell you all you need to know.

It's like when people criticize Lebron James whenever he doesn't win a championship, or even when he does, they criticize how he won it. Meanwhile, he's only put together an all time great career.

This never fails.  Someone says something people don’t like, and even a Celtic legend is not immune to backlash.  The Chief is being very sensible.

He didn't say that.  He said that Stevens is treated by the media like he has won a bunch of championships.  No one puts Malone in the same class as Kareem, Jordan, etc. because Malone didn't win championships.  I mean seriously, Malone was a multiple time MVP, 2nd all time in points scored, etc., but he is never even considered in the discussion for the greatest players ever, because he never got over the hump.

First, he is wrong - nobody is talking about Stevens like he has won a bunch of championships. They are simply giving him due praise for taking a team without its two best players to the ECF (and possibly the Finals). It's obvious other coaches are jealous of him and the fact that he doesn't care about accolades probably angers them more.

Second, when was it ever mentioned that Stevens was being considered an all-time great? He is only in his 5th season and the team has improved under him each year. While some guys have had it easy (Kerr, Lue, Spoelstra, Jackson, etc), Stevens is methodically working his way from the bottom up. We praise rising young players with immense potential who haven't won anything; the same is just being done with a coach in this case. To deny Stevens' potential to possibly win championships would be short-sighted.

You haven't been paying attention to the national media.  A lot of them have most definitely elevated Stevens into the super elite coaching class, despite the fact that he hasn't even made a Finals and through game 1 still has a losing record in the playoffs.
