Marcus Smart is a polarizing player

On the back of his jersey there should be no number but a question sign instead

Terrible shooter, unreliable scorer but all of those 50/50 plays, tommy points he racks up..... he has alot of points .  I have never been equally frustrated yet happy at the same time

I don't remember another player like him in a Celts uniform before. 

You can't even gauge his worth (salary wise) properly

anybody else feel this way?

Rewatching some of his scouting clips/college games... I just can't believe his offense has come to this.    The only thing that has transferred is his ability to make clutch shots after going 2-10 in a game.   

Without a consistent jump shot he is like a Tony Allen (better shooting version if you can even call it that) (not as good at penetrating/finishing around the basket).

Frankly, after waffling back and forth, I say if we can get him for 15 or less a year that is a no brainer.


Dude just feels the court. He always seems to know where to be.

Not matter what happens, I will follow and root for him. To me, he plays true Celtic basketball.

Are you watching whole games? Because his shooting numbers by location are nearly identical in the NBA.

And I really hope that he and the team can negotiate a good contract for him this off-season.

I know we can probably find someone who can score better than him BUT will they do the OTHER little things?

Will they be a good teammate?

Will they play defense?

Will they push the young guys?

I have a feeling that we're going to FEEL it if he leaves us.

If Ainge pays Smart $15MM per he should be shot. Tony Allen was a much better player too.

Allen was a better player before and after his injuries. His total shooting percentage in MEM dropped to 51.9% which is still far better than Smart's career 47.7% and Allen's MEM PER was 14.6 compared to Smart's career 11.2.

 6 of 7 years on NBA All-Defense 1st and 2nd teams while in MEM too.

This thread might as well be called "The Celtics wear green uniforms" or "Tommy Heinsohn has a Celtic bias."

I get why Smart is so polarizing but he's my favorite player in the NBA. There's no way to quantify the effect of him playing his guts out every night on the rest of his team. He's pure inspiration for all the right things: tough nosed defense, unselfish passing, hustle.

To me a weird thing about Marcus is that his shooting is wildly erratic but nearly everything else - defense, playmaking for others, effort - seems pretty consistent. The shooting can overshadow everything else though, that's for sure.
