At what point are we considered a serious contender to reach finals this year?

I know we are only 15 games into the season.  It is a long season, a lot of things can happen.
But at what point would everyone be satisfied with saying we are a true contender to reach the NBA finals.  Notice I am not saying winning the finals, just going to the finals.  I have heard some on here mention, lets see where we are at after 20 games or 30 games...

How long do we have to continue to win games before we start to raise expectations for this club from where ever they were after Gordon went down (playoff team, but might not win a series) to a team that can do some damage in the playoffs.  Maybe we are already there?  I hope so.

For me, if we beat GS at home this week, and then get to the 17-3, 18-2 range after 20 games, I think it is time to think a bit bigger for this season.  No wrong answers here...

We need to go toe to toe with and BEAT CLE - in the playoffs.

And we need to be very careful with the likes of The Wizards, TOR and even MIL.

DET is a sleeper as well.

But the playoffs matter big time - especially after how we've played there the last couple of years.

Mainstream media is still saying Lebron will be us in playoffs. Can’t blame them for hanging onto that point of view.

if they beat cleveland, more than once, and convincingly (not w lebron resting or something) then i think its legit.  need to go through lebron. hes the east champ till somebody proves otherwise. this could be the year though!

Like any other team our biggest opponent is the injury bug.  Enjoy the games for now and we'll see how the season pans out. I'm not thinking Finals right now.

I would argue we already are contenders. The combination of players, coach, system, back office...it's all working and it's pretty clear the league is taking note (see Kerr's latest comments). 

Yes it is still early in the season (with only 18% of games played) but we have played 6 games  against difficult teams (CLE, MIL-2, SAS, TOR, OKC) and stand at 4-2 in those games. When we have a greater sample size (10-15 games) against truly contending teams, then we can use empirical data to support the claim. Which will happen by mid-January. Games to watch:

GSW (11/16)
MIL (12/4)
SAS (12/8)
MEM (12/16)
WAS (12/25)
HOU (12/28)
CLE (1/3)

Honorable Mention
DET (11/27 & 12/10)
PHI (11/30)
MIN (1/5)
NYK (12/21: this is a different team now)

So by January 15th, we'll have an ability to really point towards our ability to not only compete but win a championship. It will give other teams we've beaten a 2nd chance to contest CBS system differently and we will see what this team is made of against switches.

let's forget results for just a minute here. The celts are winning and are NOT playing consistent ball for 48 minutes. once we do that and get consistent bench play then we can say it. remember we have to beat the cavs 4 times. no easy task. wizards are tough. raps are tough. heck even the bucks look good and they have beaten us at home. process, process, process. follow it and the results will take care of themselves. need better ball movement and more consistency. we have LOTS to clean up.

It is more about Cleveland than us.  Take them out of the picture and I'd say we're the favorites to make the finals.  We become a serious contender when it appears that Cleveland isn't going to get their issues mitigated.  Need to see how they look a month after IT has returned.

I think we are a serious contender until Cleveland shows that they are.  Right now, we are a serious contender because Cleveland is not.  They need to get IT back and playing like 2016-17 IT and show they have figured it out.  If they do that, we will be far less serious contenders but until they do, we are the team to beat.
