I love Marcus Smart as a 6th man, but I don't think the Celtics would be willing to pay him what other teams will. He'll have an opportunity to start on weaker teams and will command between $15-20 million/ year. He's a slightly better version of Tony Allen and there doesn't seem to be a big enough drop off between Smart and Rozier for them to justify paying him that kind of money. I was hoping Smart would be able to improve his shooting, as Avery Bradley did in his 3rd or 4th year, but he's just not getting any better. He's the worst shooter of the rotation players.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Who knows what Danny is thinking. Maybe smart accepts the Danny lowball offer? He comes off he bench so he deserves a bench salary. Smart should be aware of that in his value

Highest +- against the Magic. Are you kidding me? Shooting is just an icing on Marcus' game. He's already miles better than Tony Allen offensively. Smart can post up, pass and make plays. Tony Allen's offensive game is so one-dimensional, it's not even close.

Rozier's shooting is so streaky that if he's not shooting well, he almost a liability on the offense. Smart on the other hand set screens, call for plays and boxes out even if his shots are not falling. Not to mention, he always deliver when it matters most.

No teams will offer more than 15mil for Smart due to his shooting and that's a good thing because it well help us keep him. And Wyc said that he's willing to pay luxury tax as long as they are legit contenders.

I feel sorry for the team that gives Smart $15 million - $20 million per year.

Hopefully it’s the Lakers.

I think he’ll take a longer deal from us.  I doubt Brad wants to see him go.

$65 over 5 years seems fair.

I love Marcus, but I would rather promote Rozier and save that money for Brown's upcoming contract.

Would you take less to stay in Boston if you're from Texas?

I think he can get paid a lot more to go somewhere else. I think he's going to get a 4/80m offer. Tough for Danny to say yes to that.
The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.

The worse offensive player in the history of the NBA. No thanx 😂

doubt he gets 4/80 and I could be wrong, but he seems happy here. Has a great coach, he is on a winning team and the fans love him. He is clearly a clubhouse leader.

If Smart would accept an offer between 10-12m I say keep him, even with his offensive woes.  But if he gets an offer of 15-20m or more we have to let him walk.  You can't afford to pay your 6th man that much money, no matter how great he is defensively.

Looks like maybe we will get the best defense of Smart's career for this year since he is trying to market himself for the big FA contract.  That's good enough for me.  His toughness could really help us when we get into the playoffs.  And right now Top 2 in the East looks like a nearly sure thing.

When Gordon comes back, we just get even deeper and more talented.  Plus Tatum, Brown, Rozier, Ojeyle etc. will be battle tested by then.  Silver lining indeed!

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
I know people are convinced money is all that matters, but Smart genuinely looks like hes emotionally happy, and well invested here in Boston especially based on the hospitality, the success, and the longevity of our young future. I do hope that Isaiah Thomas's brinks truck mantra didn't get wedged into his head. I think Smart will at least give us a small modicum of a hometown discount, and that might be the big factor.

We could be something special here. Small sample, but I'm pretty sure regardless, we're going to be a great above average scoring team, that will also rely on their switch happy trap defense too. Smart and Horford, or whoever can step up, can be our vocal catalysts on the locker room, and on defense.

The sky is the limit.

I think on this team, we need defensive specialists, that can also create favorable certain matchups and just come out into the court with heart.

I love Rozier, but I think he is also going to get paid too. Smart fits on this team, and he's been an awesome locker room presence for us, and our team's morale.

My guess?

Ainge lets him walk. Rozier mitigates the loss somewhat, and we land Ayton, but we mourn the defensive presence of Smart.

Look at the salary structure we're going to have. 3 max contracts, Jayson, Jaylen, and probably another pick in '18 or '19 on high rookie contracts, middle contracts like Morris', and the rest needed to fill out a roster.

Signing another guy to a big contract isn't feasible. Unless he's really cheap on a new contract, Smart is in his last year as a Celtic.

The re-signing of Baynes worries me too. I really hope we can lock him up for a few years. His loss would be sorely missed.

I like Marcus, but I'm afraid the above is true.

Why does anyone think another team is going to make Smart a big offer?  He's shooting 31%/30%/70% and he's doing it in Brad's system.
