One positive if he has a small improvement in play is it gives you a okay contract to trade in a salary match down the line.

The way he's talking about nutrition concerns me. For sustainable weight loss, one has to have the understanding of macronutrient breakdowns and caloric levels. He didn't mention any of that, or bring up any high protein foods he was eating. He said, essentially, that he just cleaned up his diet and did 2 workouts a day. That's not a recipe for sustainable weight.

The man is a pro athlete, and those two workouts can be for hours.  So relax.

Give me, a break, cleaning up one's diet can help quite a bit and exercising more usually helps.   You really don't think he spoke to a trainer or nutritionist?   He has the money to do so and good work ethic much better than Sully.

Yeah, I am going to go out on a limb here and say that Sully didn't really clean up his diet (at least during the season). Bodybuilding guys think they have it all figured out in terms of diet  :P but different individuals have different specific needs. Smart is an NBA PG which means he does a LOT of cardio. The key for him isn't necessarily having a nutritionist concocting the perfect tupperware food container meals; it is having his own nutritional plan that is sustainable throughout the course of the season.

Smart clearly put in a lot of work this off-season with exercise and diet, hopefully he doesn't blow it (and he has every incentive not to).

Both Sully and Smart talked about fruit as their healthy go to... sugar. Ray Allen once said, "Somtimes I'll plurge and have some blueberries"

The hall of famer got it. And look at Ray Allen today. Almost twice their age and looks better than half the league
I don't think he has to be a scientist as far as macronutrient breakdown but you are definitely right that the fruit comments show that he still doesn't really get it.  Most people don't.

I would have said no, but that price seems fair now that he decided not to be fat!

Easy pass. Smart can be replaced on the cheap any year through the draft, free agency or trade.  There's no shortage of defensive guards with some handle who have the "potential" to become scoring threats down the road.  Let some other team pay him 12.5 million dollars a year to come off their bench.

The guy has great hustle, and will serve plucky non-contenders well for years to come, but that's not what the Celtics are aspiring to.

There is a big difference between being cut and being healthy are you aware of that many of the weight lifters abuse  and starve and dehydrate themselves before a  competition.   That is not even remotely healthy.  Some fruit is ok, high carb fruits maybe not a good idea, but it is better to get your vitamins from food than from a pill.   Portion control is key in anything.

I think us resigning him will come down to his shot.  If he can show it has improved and is good enough to keep the defense honest then he is definitely worth keeping.   If he can't shoot then maybe we look elsewhere.   I say, this loving Marcus and all the 50/50 plays he wins and his defense.

This is what I think. He can get in the greatest shape of his life but if he doesn't improve his outside shooting mechanics, his poor shot selection and his ability to finish at the rim, he isn't worth $10 million a year.

If he improves his shot, as youd like, hed make 20+mill per year.

Yeah, totally. If Smart becomes a true scorer and outside shooter, then he essentially becomes the guard version of Kawhi Leonard. That would be awesome!

Personally, I would rather he make that transformation after we sign him for ~$10M/yr than being forced to shell out $20M+/yr, but if Smart becomes a true all-star, there would be no reason not to give him a huge contract.

Versatile defensive guards with above-average play making skill are difficult to find, especially ones who comes up in clutch situations.

I think Smart will re-sign here at a manageable rate (my guess, 4 Years/56M).

It's probably also telling that out of the IT/AB/MS trio that was set to hit 2018 FA, he kept Smart and Isaiah (not Bradley), and IT was gone the moment Irving became available.

Makes me think Ainge KNEW he wasn't keeping Bradley long term at a near-max rate and that he's both high on Smart and believes he can be kept at a "bargain rate".

Now unless some S&T is worked out involving Smart for some Anthony Davis trade next summer, I think Smart is here for the long run.

I think so also

Smart seems like a loyal guy

BUT if Danny low balls him..no doubt he will be out

He is already worth 10 million as a scrappy versatile D player. But with a shot and better ability to finish at the net....could be a good one, finally

Yeah, and Ainge seems real high on Smart (there's a reason Ainge took him at #6 and didn't risk seeing him possibly scooped up before #17 in the 2013 draft).

I just don't see Ainge just letting go of Smart, and if I'm not mistaken, they are in luxury tax territory without him anyways (so they are paying a luxury tax anyways.. so just get a reasonable deal to lock up Smart w/his bird rights and pay the luxury tax too).

Before #16? Smart was always ranked in the top 5-7. There is no way LAL pass on him if we take Randle. Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to have him fall to Young's spot, but that wasn't even close to happening.

But, yeah, I agree with your overall premise. DA was and still is very high on Smart. It is quite notable that he was the only one kept of the IT/AB/Smart trio that was all up for new contracts next off-season. I sure hope we keep him, and the trade for Kyrie has allowed that, but am hoping we don't need to break the bank.
