The Boston Celtics considered trading for Jimmy Butler, but sources say they had some concerns over how he would mesh with Gordon Hayward both on the court and as personalities.

Boston could have comfortably beat the Minnesota Timberwolves' offer of Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn and a pick swap.

The Celtics also had interest in Paul George, but there was a fear he would leave for the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent in 2018.

Boston also has Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown as high lottery picks on the wing.

A Butler focus might be burying the lede - Butler was traded on draft day, so it sure sounds like we knew Hayward was coming here well before free agency started

Glad to see Danny doing his homework to make sure the players mesh well.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Chicago and Indiana want two blue chip assets from Boston in a trade for Butler or Paul George? To me, lost in the hoopla of the (potential) Irving deal is the fact that Cleveland only asked for the Brooklyn pick. I understand some will look at Isaiah as being that other blue chip asset, but Danny may not have seen him in that light between his hip and contract demand for next season.

exactly. cleveland asked for the least, and kyrie has arguably the highest upside of all the available players. plus he fits better with hayward and horford

danny was also able to unload the ticking time bomb in IT.

Whteher they knew or not doesn't matter.  Had they traded for butler, it then would have impacted whether they went for Hayward at all.
