The thing I'm bothered the most about is that Danny seemed to overpay for Irving, especially when you consider the going rate for other superstars, particularly superstars in toxic situations (like Cousins in Sacramento).
That said, while you can make the argument Danny should have made a different deal than this one, it does seem that he was getting to the point where he had to cash some of his chips in.
Let's be honest, if the Brooklyn pick goes top 2 or 3, it's really going to sting. But even if Bagley Jr. or whoever is a sure-fire stud, how many years will that take to transpire?
In the meantime, we certainly blow any window that Horford has to contribute in a contender, we waste at least a couple years of Hayward in his prime, and we are all but handcuffed into giving IT a max contract, which probably wasn't a good idea.
So essentially, not pulling the trigger here was basically to say that we had no shot of a title with the IT/Hayward/Horford core and that our only real hope was that Brown, Tatum, and the Brooklyn pick became superstars that were complemented by an aging IT/Hayward/Horford core.
And I don't think Danny or ownership wanted to do that, particularly when the Brooklyn pick was no sure thing to be a stud. And hence, here we are now. I don't love it, but I get why they did it. Now time will have to tell how it all shakes out.
