Kelly Olynyk agrees to 4-year, $50M+ deal with the Miami Heat

Somewhere there's a thread from earlier in the season where I predicted KO would get $12-14 million per year, so I'm feeling both pleased at being correct and disappointed that it's with the Heat.

I wonder if this sets the scene for a Marcus Smart contract next summer? The cap will be pretty stagnant and there will be less money to go around. We could see him stay for around $10m/yr

It depends on how Smart does this year, obviously, but as the Celtics will likely be in the luxury tax even without matching him, I think teams will be willing to give him a sizable offer sheet without worrying that it will be matched.  A $10 million contract for Smart could easily cost the Celtics $36 million.  (I do think the team will spend into the tax -- I just don't know that they'll be willing to match an offer sheet if they've already hit it.)

Glad he found a team.   I think they will regret this signing though because KO only shows up to play every few games and is inconsistent and uneven in his performance.  I won't say I wish him well, because I can't stand Riley, but I don't wish KO ill.

Really sucks to see him leave for such little money.

This is what the market was for him.   

I was WAY off, I thought he'd get offers of 18-22 million a year x 4 years from the Nets, Hornets etc.

Guys here over value our players to the extreme.  Some of it is becoming attached to our players I am sure.   

I always thought KO was a double edged sword, skilled, sometimes soft, not an athlete but he compensated with a good basketball IQ.    Too inconsistent, thought to be relied upon.   He won us that one playoff game.

I though he would get overpaid a bit like around $14-16M.  By the end of his contract in 4 years $12.5M/year will look like a pretty decent value, mainly because KO is likely to improve further.

Dion Waiters - 4 years / $52M
Kelly Olynyk - 4 years / $50M

Not that any of the contracts are that bad (although Johnson is 30 years old), just surprising they went 4 years on all these non-stars. If one or two of them really pan out, maybe they'll be solid trade chips.

Looks like that is going to screw his team over long term though.

I don't think he will improve a whole bunch.   He did not here.   He was already possessing a high skill level when he came into the league.   Skills are what guys get better at usually and their body.  A lot of athletic ability is innate and hard to improve.    Time will tell.

Yeah, looks like the Heat are going the way of the Blazers, but with slightly better contracts. The only major change to their roster is signing Kelly; I'm not sure that is going to really move the needle for them.

They should be an interesting team to watch and may be able to build on their end of the season run.

Yeah this is where I'm at and I think a lot of people on here way overvalued KO thinking he was going to get a Ryan Anderson type contract.  The simple truth is, KO just isn't that good.  He had playing time there for him to grab and he could never manage to grab more than 20-24 mpg.  There was no one better than him keeping his minutes down, he just couldn't earn any more.  He just isn't consistent enough and he has been basically the same player his entire career.  I just don't see him suddenly playing 30+ mpg and becoming a reliable consistent player.  Maybe he proves me wrong, but I just don't see it and there is no way I would have given him 9+ figures a year.  Total waste of money.
