It's really generous of him to take such a discount, but it really shouldn't even be allowed. The 2nd best player in the NBA in his prime should be forced to make the max.
I don't disagree with you at all, because of the problems that could create if more players on more "super" teams did the same thing...but "forcing" them is something that the owners would never get in contract with the Players Union on the issue.
If somebody wants to leave money on the table, they are free to do so...from those who accept vet minimum to ring chase to the best in the game.

i realize the MLB is very different, but remember when this exact circumstance occurred when the Red Sox attempted to get ARod in 2004? Deal got shot down by PA because it necessitated ARod taking a pay cut, which he was going to do voluntarily. But they didn't want a precedent of a top salary being cut as a tool teams used to facilitate player movement. Although this is a FA, it is similar. Not sure I agree with forcing a player in any way, as I thought it ludicrous that ARod was not allowed to do as he pleased(although it turned out well in the end for the Red Sox after all). But this sentiment has come up before in sports and is an interesting point to consider. Silver has tried to stop the super team, but it seems here to stay for the foreseeable future.
